Big names that could move at the MLB trade deadline

The MLB trade deadline is fast approaching on July 30, and teams who are looking to load up for a postseason run will need to make moves to bolster their roster soon. Organizations who are looking to rebuild for the future will also need to unload talent in the coming days. We’ll take a look at players who may be playing in a new uniform come August. India was the National League Rookie of the Year in 2021, so it feels unlikely that he has become a trade candidate at age 27. With that said, Cincinnati hasn’t quite performed up to expectations, which could make them a seller. The Cincinnati Enquirer believes he could still be moved despite signing a two-year contract extension this offseason.

It’s been a miserable season for the White Sox, who have not gotten anything going in four months. Crochet seems all but likely to find a new home before the deadline, shortly after making his first All-Star game this month. Sports Illustrated reports that the Los Angeles Dodgers are making a push for his services.

Chicago might look to completely reshape their team down the stretch, which would include parting ways with Robert Jr. as well. Robert’s biggest flaw is that he hasn’t been able to stay healthy in his five years in the big leagues. MLB’s website thinks that Robert is more likely to be dealt after the season.

There was a lot of noise early on in the year that Alonso would be the biggest prize at the trade deadline. This narrative has cooled considerably, as the Mets have played themselves into the thick of the Wild Card race. It feels unlikely that New York would trade him now, but they risk losing the proven slugger for next to nothing this winter if they don’t move him.

Bichette has struggled mightily during the 2024 campaign, and Toronto finds themselves out of the American League playoff mix. It’ll be interesting to see if the Blue Jays chalk this year up as an anomaly with an eye towards next year, or if they start to hit the reset button. Bichette has been a strong player nearly every season before this one.

Heavy’s website believes that the New York Yankees are a legitimate suitor for Diaz as the trade deadline approaches. New York’s regular catcher Jose Trevino is on the shelf with an injury, and the Yankees might be looking for an upgrade behind the plate. Heavy believes Diaz can make an impact at the plate as well.

The Marlins waived the white flag early in the MLB season, by shipping infielder Luis Arraez to the San Diego Padres in early May. Miami may continue to ship parts away in the coming days, with Chisholm potentially being the most attractive. Bleacher Report thinks that Chisholm’s value may be limited by his injury history and his “brash” attitude.

The Athletics seem to be counting the days until they find a new permanent home, and won’t likely be competitive for several years. Teams looking for a boost at the plate could do a lot worse than Rooker, who has played very well in relative obscurity this season. Sports Illustrated thinks that the Cleveland Guardians could make a move for Oakland’s slugger.

The Philadelphia Phillies would look even more formidable than they’ve already been if they scooped Scott up from the Marlins, as ClutchPoints thinks they might. He would be a huge addition as a back of the bullpen arm that could shift a postseason series. In some ways, Scott may be more likely to be traded than Chisholm.

The Orange County Register writes that Rengifo is getting healthy at the right time… the time for the Angeles to trade him. Rengifo can hold his own at several infield positions, as a jack of all trades, master of none type of player. Still, his versatility will be attractive come playoff time, so he should have a notable market.

The Tigers have shown encouraging signs of improvement, but it feels like Flaherty might not stick around long enough to witness the full comeback. Tarik Skubal is the unquestioned ace of Detroit’s staff, which has made Flaherty a topic of trade conversation. Athlon Sports thinks the Boston Red Sox could make a move for him.

The Angels are mired in rebuilding mode, which means Estevez is a name to keep an eye on during the trade deadline. MLB Trade Rumors’ website notes that the league has been monitoring him after his Reliever of the Month performance in June. He could slot in as a closer for a contender, or an eighth inning player.

The White Sox have a number of players who could be dealt at the deadline, and Fedde is yet another candidate. It seems like a couple of outlets are tracking the St. Louis Cardinals’ pursuit of the hurler, who has bounced back nicely after spending the 2023 season in Korea.

Finnegan might be considered somewhat of a late-bloomer, as he made the All-Star team for the first time in his career at age 32 this season. SportsGrid believes that Finnegan might be the best reliever to target during this year’s deadline, as they compare him to other potential trade candidates like Estevez.

Winker has bounced around since making the All-Star team with the Reds in 2021. He played for the Seattle Mariners in 2022, the Milwaukee Brewers in 2023, and for the Nationals this season. Winker no longer profiles as a future star, but could carry value as a platoon player off the bench.
