Jacoby Jones dead aged 40

Per reporting by NBC affiliate KPRC2 Houston, former Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Jacoby Jones has died aged 40.

“Passed away peacefully”

Per a statement by the NFLPA on behalf of Jones’ family, Jones, “passed away peacefully at his home in New Orleans.”

Cause of death unknown

So far, there have been no reports confirming the cause of Jones’ death.

“Support”

The family statement continued, offering thanks to the NFLPA for, “all the kind thoughts and support you have shown us during this challenging time.”

J.J. Watt’s tribute

J.J. Watt, who played with Jones at the Houston Texans, took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his sadness, writing, “Jacoby was one of the most fun-loving teammates and people I've ever been around. Always dancing and laughing, with a permanent smile on his face. Gone far, far too soon.”

“Absolute legend”

Former Indianapolis Colts punter and current broadcaster Pat McAfee also took to social media, writing, “Jacoby Jones was an absolute legend. He was beloved by literally everybody he met and lit up every room he walked into.”

Texans’ statement

The Houston Texans, who drafted Jones in 2007 released a statement saying, “We are deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Jacoby Jones. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this difficult time.”

Raven’s statement

The Ravens, who Jones helped win a Super Bowl, also released a statement that reads, “Jacoby had the unique ability to connect with everyone he encountered. His charisma, joy and love created a one-of-a-kind presence that could light up any room or brighten any dark day.”

Mile High Miracle

Jones, who was one of the best returners in the NFL during his career, had multiple huge plays that helped the Ravens win Super Bowl XLVII. First, in what became known as the Mile High Miracle, Jones caught a 70-yard TD to win the AFC Championship over the Broncos to take the game to overtime.

Jones’ incredible post-season run wasn’t finished there, however, with the former Lane Dragon returning a kick-off 108 yards and catching a 56-yard to help the Ravens overcome the 49ers in the biggest game of them all.

Post-football

Having retired from football in 2017, Jones joined the coaching staff at Alabama State University in 2022. He is survived by his mother, Emily, and his son, Little Jacoby.
