Jack Grealish reportedly spent '50 grand a night' after Euro 2024 rejection

When Gareth Southgate decided to leave Jack Grealish out of his Euro 2024 squad, many fans were shocked, but perhaps no one was as surprised as Grealish himself. In response to his exclusion, Grealish reportedly took himself to Dubai to drown his sorrows, a decision that could prove costly, in more ways than one...

According to former England striker Paul Gascoigne, Grealish, "spent 50 grand on a night out in Dubai when he didn’t make the England squad," which for most people could seem excessive, but as Gascoigne points out, "he's got the money".

Gascoigne, who was speaking to Techopedia, gave the Man City man a warning, saying, "He's got quality, but he needs to knuckle down. I was the same. When I had a few days off, I’d go and celebrate. You had a drink and that."

The former Tottenham and Rangers star also claimed, "Sometimes I wish I hadn't, I regretted it, but I still managed to perform. If you can perform on a Saturday then fair enough, the manager is not going to have a go at you." Jack Grealish told SunSport that Gareth Southgate's decision to snub him for Eur0 2024 "was probably football-wise the most difficult thing I've ever had to deal with in my career".

Grealish admitted it was difficult to watch his country play at the Euros, as he was, "absolutely heartbroken". But, given the tournament's popularity it was hard to avoid, "every time you turn on the phone or turn on the TV or whatever you just see it so it was hard to not to see it".

The Man City winger told SunSport, "Myself, I felt like I should have been in the squad," but admitted, "I'm sure every person that didn't get picked in the squad, whether that's myself or any of the other players, would have thought the same."

Up until Euro 2024, Grealish had been a consistent member of Gareth Southgate's England squads, operating as a backup left-winger for the most part. This led many fans to buy shirts with his name on in preparation for the tournament, causing mayhem when he wasn't selected...

According to The Daily Mail, England fans have been flocking to re-selling sites such as Vinted and Ebay looking to sell Jack Grealish shirts following his omission from Gareth Southgate's Euro 2024 squad.

The report continues that some fans spent £84.99 (€100/$108) on official England shirts with Grealish's name on the back, only to list them online for as little as £15 (€18/$19)!

For some, the omission of Grealish from the England squad was more disappointing, as they were given a shirt with his name as a gift. One Vinted seller wrote, "Never even tried on, was given to me as a gift but I'm looking to sell it".

Grealish appeared in just 20 Premier League matches for City last season, playing just over 1,000 minutes. He managed just three goals and an assist as his side went on to win yet another Premier League title.

Per Oliver Kay for The Athletic, Grealish was "shocked" and "devastated" at his exclusion from the England squad. Kay goes on to query why Grealish would be surprised at this decision, adding, "Surely a player more self-aware than most cannot be totally shocked when, by his own admission, he has struggled for form for months."

Kay continues by pointing out the extreme level of competition in England’s attack, with Phil Foden, Bukayo Saka, Cole Palmer, Anthony Gordon, and Eberechi Eze all battling for two (probably) spots. Did Grealish outperform any of those players last year? Almost certainly not.

Southgate described his decision to leave out Grealish, and James Maddison, as, "tough calls we’ve gone over and over and over as a group of staff to try to be fair, to get the right rationale."

Given Grealish’s age, 28, and current dip in form, combined with the up-and-coming players around him, his path back into the England squad looks difficult. If he is still sitting on the bench in most games for City this season, he will be another year older and in a similar position as he is now.

Per Simon Stone of the BBC, Chelsea, Tottenham, and Villa have all been mentioned as possible destinations for Grealish, but his £300,000 (€352,000/$381,000) a week salary, per Capology, is prohibitive for most clubs.

Grealish at his best was an attacking phenom, able to go past players as if they aren’t there, making him, "one of the most dangerous players in England," per Stone. In Pep Guardiola’s incredibly rigid formation, Grealish’s natural instincts have been curbed, forcing him to hold his width, neutering his ability to drift into space.

Watching Jack Grealish in full flow is one of football’s great pleasures, so perhaps a change of scenery will be the best option for him. Whether it’s at City in a different role, or a loan deal that could see him return to a Guardiola-less City, something drastic is needed if he ever wants to return to the England squad.
