Fantastic final adds

Week 14 marks the end of the fantasy football regular season in the majority of leagues. It certainly flew by, but teams who are looking to clinch their spot in the postseason, there is no time to celebrate. Here are the priority waiver wire additions fantasy managers should target during this crucial week of matchups. All statistics are sourced from Football Reference.

New Orleans D/ST

Things have been brighter in New Orleans since they fired Dennis Allen after an embarrassing loss to the Carolina Panthers on November 3. They’ve gone 2-1 since, and their defense has looked much stronger under interim head coach Darren Rizzi. Additionally, they appear to have dodged a bullet in Week 13, as star safety Tyrann Mathieu is not expected to miss time with a shoulder injury, according to Saints Wire.

Licking their chops

The Saints are playing much better football these days, and will square off with a New York Giants team that is in disarray in Week 14. It’s anyone’s guess as to who will start under center for New York, but this looks like the perfect opportunity to add a surging Saints unit against an offense that has been putrid for the majority of the 2024 season.

RB Isaac Guerendo, San Francisco 49ers

According to ESPN, 49ers star running back Christian McCaffery suffered a PCL injury that has a good chance of sidelining him for the remainder of the season. It’s the latest unfortunate circumstance for a player who is viewed as fantasy football’s biggest cheat code. Additionally, the 49ers put Jordan Mason on IR as well, which completely opens the door for Guerendo.

Go Guerendo

There is no player on waivers this week with more upside than Guerendo. He scored a touchdown in Sunday night’s snow-filled affair against the Buffalo Bills. San Francisco’s games aren’t likely to feature that level of inclement weather, but they should still feature their rookie back notably down the stretch, as they have little to no choice to do otherwise.

TE Pat Freiermuth, Pittsburgh Steelers

It’s been hard to start any Steelers pass catcher with confidence during the 2024 fantasy season, except for possibly George Pickens. That reality has led many to shy away from Pittsburgh wide receivers or tight ends, with good reason. With that said, Freiermuth has seemed to emerge as a worthy streamer at tight end with the improved play of Russell Wilson under center.

Picking up Pat

Freiermuth has four targets in Week 12, but that number jumped to seven in Week 13. Granted, the Steelers might not find themselves in the same type of shootout in Week 14 against the Cleveland Browns, but they have also not fared well when it comes to giving up fantasy points to tight ends. Football Database slots the Browns in at the bottom 10 of the NFL in that category.

WR Parker Washington, Jacksonville Jaguars

Jacksonville’s offense has been a mess this season, and things did not figure to get better after quarterback Trevor Lawrence took a vicious hit that forced him out of the game with a concussion. With that said, targets have been streamlined in Jacksonville due to injuries, and Washington gobbled up 12 of them in Week 13.

Driving on Parker

The good thing for Washington’s day was, it didn’t seem to matter who was under center for the Jaguars. The wide receiver was continuously fed the ball by Mac Jones when he entered the game as well. The Jaguars’ schedule is pretty favorable for the rest of the season, so Washington would seem to be fantasy viable heading into the postseason.

Miami D/ST

It might be hard to believe, but the Dolphins are going to play their division rivals for the first time on Sunday, as the New York Jets head down to Miami. The Dolphins are bottom three in the NFL in sacks on defense, but they will be facing Aaron Rodgers, who turned 41 years old on December 2.

Messy operation

It stands to reason that the Dolphins may not have as tough of a time getting to the quarterback, since the Jets have a passer who is not mobile at this stage of his career. In addition, the Jets have committed the fourth most penalties on offense in the NFL, so they’ve made a habit of beating themselves this year.

RB Tyjae Spears, Tennessee Titans

Rotoworld wrote about the state of the Titans’ backfield after Sunday’s loss to the Washington Commanders. They pointed out starting running back Tony Pollard’s woes in Week 13, having lost a fumble and dropped several passes. Pollard has been a solid fantasy player this season, but having Spears at the back end of fantasy rosters isn’t a bad idea.

Saving Spears

Spears only touched the ball once in Week 13, and has been banged up for much of the season. With Tennessee going nowhere fast this season, it wouldn’t be surprising for the Titans to scale Pollard’s workload down and get a longer look at Spears. That possibility only increases if Pollard continues to have trouble hanging on to the football.

WR Ray-Ray McCloud, Atlanta Falcons

USA Today believes that it might be time for the Falcons to have a conversation about who should start at quarterback for the rest of the season. Kirk Cousins threw four interceptions in a disappointing home loss to the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday. It’s unlikely Atlanta would go to Michael Penix Jr. at this point, but they might simplify the offense next week and beyond. McCloud could be a part of that strategy.

Pitch and catch

McCloud is a versatile weapon who has taken and can continue to take pressure off of Cousins. Yahoo Sports noted that he made a spectacular 60-yard catch, most of which came on an athletic catch and run after McCloud had the ball in his hands. Don’t be surprised if Atlanta dials up shorter passes to let McCloud use his speed in the open field.

TE Luke Schoonmaker, Dallas Cowboys

As we’ve touched on earlier, sometimes matchups can give certain units or players a bump during the fantasy season. The Cowboys are set to take on the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday Night Football in Week 14, who possess as high octane an offense as there is in the NFL. That should elevate the floor for guys like Schoonmaker, who is already a consistent part of Dallas’ attack.

Steady Schoonmaker

Schoonmaker has filled in at tight end without Jake Ferguson, who has missed time due to a concussion. He’s averaging just under seven targets per game, and it would not be shocking to see him get more looks than that in a shootout against Cincinnati. He told Dallas beat reporter Nick Harris that he is trying to have fun with the opportunity he has been given in the past month or so.
