Sam Kerr celebrates historic World Cup win with footballer girlfriend
Australian legend, Sam Kerr, was seen celebrating the Matildas' win against France in the Women’s World Cup with her girlfriend, Kristie Mewis.
Mewis is a professional footballer herself, playing for Gotham FC in the National Women’s Soccer League in the US.
Sam Kerr has a claim to being the best player in the world in the women’s game and Mewis is no slouch herself, with over 50 caps for the US Women’s National Team.
Whilst the USWNT had been knocked out in the previous round, Mewis stuck around to support her girlfriend. It turned out to be the right call as Kerr came on as a substitute and scored a penalty to help Australia reach the semi-finals of a World Cup for the first time.
For Kerr it has been a frustrating tournament as she has been desperately trying to recover from a calf injury that has seen her sidelined for most of the World Cup. In the past two games, she has been able to make cameo performances as her side make a push for a first World Cup trophy.
Kerr and Mewis first met back in 2019, with Kerr plying her trade in America at the time. They started dating in 2020 via Zoom calls and online chats before quarantining for two weeks together, they have been a couple ever since.
The pair went public after a matchup between the sides in the buildup to the 2020 Olympics (held in 2021) in Tokyo. The pair were seen embracing after the game, a shock to many as many thought Kerr was still dating Nikki Stanton (another pro player) at the time.
Whilst the relationship off the pitch remains strong, on the pitch it is Mewis who has the upper hand. Her US side beat Kerr’s Australia at the 2020 Olympics to win the bronze medal. The pair were once again seen together after the game.
With Kerr’s Australia set to play England for a place in the World Cup final, Mewis will once again be in attendance. Perhaps her presence will spur Kerr on even more as the Matildas push to be world champions.
