Ranking NFL fan bases by how desperate they are for a Super Bowl win
It’s a longstanding NFL cliché, but it’s true that only one team can truly be happy at the end of the season. This reality causes fanbases throughout the league to yearn for the day when their team wins it all. We’ll rank the top 10 NFL playoff fan bases who are most excited to get their hands on the Lombardi Trophy.
Kansas City has won two Super Bowls recently, so it’s safe to say that Chiefs Kingdom doesn’t absolutely need a title to survive. However, this regular season has been much tougher than previous campaigns. A title would reassure Chiefs fans that as long as they have Patrick Mahomes, a Super Bowl championship is well within reach.
Philadelphia has also won a Super Bowl in the last handful of years, but the way last year’s big game ended had to leave Eagles fans feeling a little bit sour. Had it not been for a fluke fumble by Jalen Hurts, or a pass interference penalty called late in the game, Philadelphia might be the current defending champions.
49ers fans have felt like they had the best team for a few years running, but they have no Super Bowl rings to show for it. It seems like something debilitating has happened to San Francisco at the worst point of the season, but a championship would put the Kyle Shanahan era into a different stratosphere.
Many didn’t believe the Buccaneers would be in a prime position to make the playoffs, let alone have the potential to win games in the postseason. A Tampa Bay Super Bowl victory would help validate the franchise’s roster construction efforts, and help the organization move past the narrative that Tom Brady was the only reason why they won it all in the 2020 campaign.
The Ravens are always in the playoff mix under John Harbaugh, and broke through in 2012 with a Super Bowl victory. Baltimore featured an entirely different cast of characters back then, and are hoping to make plays when they matter most this postseason. A Super Bowl title would end criticism of the narrative that Lamar Jackson can’t perform in the big game.
The Dolphins are one of the most storied franchises in the NFL, but there are entire generations of fans who have never seen Miami play in an AFC championship game, let alone a Super Bowl. The franchise last made the conference title game in the 1992 season, and last made the Super Bowl in the 1984 campaign.
There is no team in the NFL who is under more consistent pressure than the Cowboys. As football fans know, anything less than a title for Dallas is viewed as a colossal failure. There’s reason for optimism though, as their defensive has been tremendous at taking the ball away. This tends to be a feature that championship teams can rely on in January and February.
Browns fans have had to deal with heartache for many decades, including temporarily losing their team, and stomaching moments like “The Fumble” in 1987. Fans painted the town red when the Cleveland Cavaliers won their first NBA title in 2016, and the “Dawg Pound” would likely do the same to commemorate a football title.
It’s been a resurgent year for the Lions, who have a stable of young talented players that should carry the team for years to come. Detroit is actually one of four teams(Cleveland, Jacksonville, Houston) that have never made the Super Bowl, and supporters are hoping that drought ends this year.
There’s something to be said for getting so close to the mountain top several times but ultimately falling short. The Bills made it to the Super Bowl four times in the 1990’s, only to fall in each appearance. Buffalo also lost a heartbreaking Divisional Round game in Kansas City a couple years ago. Bills mafia is looking to seal the deal in the near future, as a championship would mean everything.
