A historic French football club disappears forever

It's a side time for French football as one of their most historic clubs, Girondins Bordeaux, who have boasted players like Zinedine Zidane, have renounced their professional status after bankruptcy.

According to the JOE website, talks between Liverpool's ownership, FSG, and the French club have broken down, leaving the future of the club uncertain.

On the 25th of July 2024, the club announced it had lost its professional status after relegation to the French third division due to "too much financial instability for a French club."

The club held professional status with the French Football Federation since 1937 and will now effectively disappear, and all players will be released as free agents.

beIN Sports reports that the team's training centre will lose its accreditation, meaning youth players will also be released, and if they find a new team, Bordeaux will not receive compensation.

Girondins are leaving behind an incredible legacy they created since joining the French Federation in 1937, having become one of the country's most successful teams.

The team won six French league titles, with the last one coming in 2009, with legend Laurent Blanc leading the charge as manager.

As well as six league titles, the former French giants have won four French Cups, three League Cups, three Super Cups, and an Intertoto Cup. They also reached the UEFA Cup final in 1996.

Over the years, the team became a hotbed for some of the best talent in the world, with Zinedine Zidane, Bixente Lizarazu, and Christophe Dugarry all examples of talent they once had.

It's been a terrible demise of one of the best and most successful clubs in French football history. Can they ever make a return in the future?
