Drove apart

According to Sportskeeda, the pair are the only brothers to win the World Cup together, but instead of uniting them, the success drove them apart.

Different characters

Bobby was known as a quiet and shy character, while Jack was known as loud and outgoing, succeeding as a manager in his later career.

Visiting their mother

It wasn't their characters that caused them to drift, but actually, an issue the pair had with visiting their mother before she sadly passed in 1996, according to the Metro website.

"Rift between Bobby and my mother"

According to the Metro website, in 1996, Jack said: "I couldn't understand why there was a rift between Bobby and my mother. Suddenly, he stopped going home. I don't know why."

Taking his wife's side

Bobby said he stopped seeing his mother because his wife Norma had fallen out with his mother, and Bobby had taken his wife's side.

"There was a clash"

In Sir Bobby's autobiography, he stated: "My wife is a very strong character and does not suffer fools gladly." He added, "I am not suggesting my mother was a fool. There was a clash, and it just never went away, really."

'Hoity-toity'

I News reported that Sir Bobby didn't see his mother again after 1992, angering his brother Jack, who called Bobby's wife 'hoity-toity'.

Lots of problems

The issue between their mother was the main problem in their relationship, but throughout their careers, Bobby and Jack had issues.

"Uncompromising character"

According to the 'Finding Jack Charlton' documentary, Bobby said: "My brother was an uncompromising character. I watched him in a derby match, and he gave a goal away, and they lost."

"He punched me"

"I said to him after: 'You were stupid giving that daft goal away.' He punched me straight off the back of the couch onto the floor."

Reconcile

According to the Mirror, the pair did reconcile in a famous moment at the 2008 Sports Personality of the Year awards, with Jack presenting Bobby with the 'Lifetime Achievement' award without his knowing.

"My brother"

Handing over the award, Jack said: "Bobby Charlton is the greatest player I've ever seen. He's my brother."

Reunited in heaven

Unfortunately, Bobby couldn't be at his brother's funeral in 2020 due to his ill health, but the pair reunited in heaven after Bobby's passing in October 2023. Whatever you believe, the pair will go down as the greatest brotherly duo in football history.
