Over the top talent?

The Indiana Fever have had a busy offseason. Their front office knows that there’s not a moment to waste as Caitlin Clark ascends to the top of the sport. To that end, they’ve acquired four players who will be expected to help Clark get the Fever to the promised land during the 2025 WNBA season. All statistics are sourced from Basketball Reference.

Sydney Colson

The Fever needed players who have been to the top of the mountain before, and who were willing to sacrifice for the greater good. Colson fits that mold, as she’s proven that she’ll do whatever it takes to win. Colson told Athletes Unlimited Sports, “And I know it’s a tough pill to swallow, for people to be role players sometimes or bench players. And I knew that it wasn’t something that attacked my pride.”

Resume

Colson is a two-time WNBA champion, having won a pair of titles with the Las Vegas Aces. She’s played 10 seasons in the WNBA.

Courting Colson for Caitlin

Tony East of The Next Hoops talked about Caitlin Clark’s free agency wish list. “The Indiana Fever really wanted Colson. Caitlin Clark specifically hoped Colson could join the squad,” he wrote.

More minutes

It seems like Indiana might want Colson to play a little bit more than she did with Las Vegas. East wrote, “The team has a plan for Colson on the hardwood and believes that she will fit in well as the backup point guard behind Clark. Finding the right role was important to Colson in free agency, and she should have more usage in Indiana than she did with Las Vegas.”

Natasha Howard

Players don’t always get better with age, but Howard hasn’t had much of a drop-off in her mid-thirties. She’s averaged 17 points per game in her last two seasons with the Dallas Wings. Her numbers might not look the same with the Fever, but there’s no questioning her ability.

Resume

Howard is a three-time WNBA champion, having won two titles with the Seattle Storm and one with the Minnesota Lynx. She’s a two-time All-Star, and was the 2019 Defensive Player of the Year. She’s played 10 seasons in the WNBA as well.

Full circle

Howard actually started her WNBA career with the Fever, and played one season there under head coach Stephanie White. White has also returned to Indiana ahead of the 2025 campaign. White told the Indy Star “she took every single step and has accomplished every single thing. And that’s really a credit to her, her work ethic and her desire to become elite.”

Experience

Howard told the Indy Star, “I’m happy to be a part of this and also bring the leadership in the desire to show you what it takes to win a championship. I have three… It’s just bringing that championship mentality to this locker room, to this team, and just guiding this team.”

DeWanna Bonner

Bonner and Caitlin Clark had a minor skirmish during the 2024 WNBA playoffs, but the two will now team up in Indiana. Bonner told Sports Illustrated after signing with the Fever, “It’s the playoffs, so emotions are high, tensions are high. But I couldn’t be more excited to step on the court with Caitlin.”

Resume

Bonner has played 15 seasons in the WNBA, and has been a six-time All-Star. She’s won two WNBA titles, and has won Sixth Woman of the Year three times.

Sensing a theme

Like Howard, Bonner is also familiar with Fever head coach Stephanie White. Bonner played her last two seasons with the Connecticut Sun under her. She told the Fever’s website, “I knew from the beginning that all the lines kind of connected to Indiana. I mean the position, the basketball they play, Stephanie White came here… I knew it.”

Ageless wonder

The Next Hoops’ Noa Alzell wrote a piece on Bonner during the 2024 campaign, and her teammates were impressed by how effective she still was at age 37. Former teammate DiJonai Carrington said, “She could probably roll out of bed and drop 20, she’s just built like that.”

Sophie Cunningham

The Fever acquired Cunningham in a four-team trade, and are thrilled to have her in the building. “Sophie is a player that we have targeted for a while, and one that we believe is a perfect fit for the style we want to play. She’s a fierce competitor, works incredibly hard on both ends of the floor and is one of the best shooters in our league,” Fever GM Amber Cox told the Indy Star.

Resume

Cunningham has played six WNBA seasons, all of which came with the Phoenix Mercury. She’s a 36 percent three-point shooter for her career.

Spreading the floor

It’s going to be interesting to see how coach White deploys Cunningham during the season. Cunningham seems to have a similar skill set to Lexie Hull, who is also known for her hustling and shooting ability.

Clark claps with enthusiasm

Clark appears to be pumped up to welcome her new teammates to the franchise. She told the Indy Star, “I’m really excited. I think Kelly and Amber have done a really good job of finding pieces that fit, and it makes me excited about the future.”
