Can Lando Norris stage the largest F1 points comeback in history to beat Verstappen?

The McLaren driver has underlined the missed opportunities that have meant he has failed to make ground on Max Verstappen for the Formula One World Championship.

Despite failing to win in the last four races, Verstappen has managed to keep a 78-point lead atop the Drivers Championship heading into the final ten races, with 284 points still to play for.

Whilst Norris and McLaren's performances have been good, the British driver will feel like he has left points out on track, having failed to beat Verstappen in three of the last four races.

At the Belgium Grand Prix, Verstappen finished ahead of Norris, despite the Dutchman starting 11th and Norris starting 4th after a terrible start.

According to the RacingNews365 website, despite the mathematic possibility that Norris can catch Verstappen, the gap is currently double the size Sebastian Vettel recovered from against Fernando Alonso in 2012, which is the largest F1 championship comeback in history.

According to The Guardian, speaking in July, Norris said: "It's still on. I know it's a big stretch. But I'm not going to say no to the challenge, and definitely, as a team, we won't."

"Psychologically I'm happy, I'm excited. I'm ready to battle and looking forward to the battles that we're going to have."

According to the F1 website, the British driver won the first Formula One race of his career at the Miami GP in May, and he will need to win a few more to make the gap up with Verstappen.

Max Verstappen and his Red Bull team have gone four races without a victory, giving Norris the confidence his team can go against the naysayers and score an unlikely championship victory.

Speaking after the race in Hungary, Norris said: "A lot of people are going to say that there's no chance, but we're going to keep fighting, and I'm going to give myself the best opportunity to do so."

He added: "Especially when you see Max today and Red Bull, not performing so well, making mistakes, crashing."
