Worcestershire County Cricket Club announced the death of 20-year-old spin bowler Josh Baker on the 2nd of May 2024.

Per reporting by the BBC, the cause of death is unknown at this time.

Baker, a tall left-arm orthodox bowler, was seen as an exciting prospect at Worcestershire, playing in multiple County Championship games this season, per ESPN Cricinfo.

“Devasted”

Former England spinner Ashley Giles, currently working as the Worcestershire chief executive, told media, “The news of Josh’s passing has left us all devastated.”

As the BBC has reported, Baker was a key part of the club’s successful promotion back to Division One following six years in the second tier.

Second XI

The day before Baker’s death he had been involved in a second XI fixture against Somerset. He had taken three wickets following a rain-affected start to the match.

Club statement

Worcestershire County Cricket Club released a statement on their club website reading, “More than his skills as a spin bowler, it was his vibrant spirit and infectious enthusiasm that endeared him to everyone he met. His warmth, kindness, and professionalism were remarkable, making him a true credit to his family and a loved member of our team.”

Tributes

Other counties in the English domestic system added their own tributes on X (formerly Twitter) with Warwickshire writing, “Our heartfelt condolences go to Josh's family, friends and Worcestershire colleagues on hearing this tragic news.”

Usama Mir

Pakistan fast bowler Usama Mir, who played with Worcestershire last season and is set to rejoin the club for the T20 Blast competition this season, also weighed in with a tribute. Mir wrote, “So sad and upset to hear the news of Josh’s passing. He was one of the nicest people you could meet. And a brilliant cricketer.”

Condolences

Worcestershire posted on X that they are leaving open the Severn Suite at their New Road stadium so fans and those affected by the news can sign a book of condolence for Baker. It is expected all of English cricket will pay tribute to Baker during the next round of County Championship games. The picture shows Essex flying their club flag at half-mast.
