Marc Cucurella fires back at England icon following Spain's Euro 2024 win

Marc Cucurella has taken to Instagram to mock former Manchester United and England right-back Gary Neville following England’s 2-1 defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final.

In the early stages of Euro 2024, Gary Neville, working for ITV, told viewers he felt Spain couldn’t win the tournament with Marc Cucurella as their starting left-back.

Neville said, “He’s not been convincing at Chelsea. He’s played a few games towards the end of the season. He’s aggressive, he’s tenacious, he’s a busy little full back [but] the price tag still astounds everyone to this day.”

Neville continued, “The Spanish defence, it’s got a lot of experience now but there’s something just missing from Spain that makes you feel like they’re not going to go all the way. I have to say that him being at left-back is a good example of why we think that.”

Following Spain’s victory, the Chelsea full back took to social media, posting a picture of him celebrating with the caption, “We went all the way Gary. Thanks for your support,” accompanied by Spanish flags, a love heart, and a trophy emoji, per The Independent.

Cucurella, who has mostly failed to convince following his move to Chelsea, was the best left-back at the tournament and made the crucial pass to Mikel Oyarzabal for Spain’s wining goal.

Many publications even selected Cucurella in their team of the tournament. The Scotsman gave the Spaniard an average rating of 7.57 across the tournament and said he, “Had a tough season at Chelsea last year but flourished for Spain at the Euros. Has been one of the best full-backs throughout the tournament,” about Cucurella’s performances.

According to The Independent, Cucurella suggested his performances were due to his, “diligent work ethic during an underwhelming spell at club side Chelsea”.

Cucurella’s response to Neville’s trolling perhaps sums up Spain’s attitude throughout the tournament, with coach Luis de la Fuente called, “Luis de la Who?” following his appointment.

Player of the Tournament Rodri spoke of de la Fuente following the match, saying, “This is something that was cultivated, many of us were Under-19, Under-21 champions together. The coach knew what he was doing. The coach knew what he was doing!” suggesting the outside negativity only inspired the Spaniards on!
