Where was the game won and lost?

The Eagles triumphed over the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX. In the end, the game wasn't close, but what were the key moments that led to a resounding Philly victory?

10: Eagles go deep on 4 & 2

With 11:43 left in the first quarter, the Eagles had a 4th & 2 from midfield. At times this season, Nick Sirianni has balked at the chance to go for it in these situations, preferring to punt and pin the opposition deep. Instead, he went for it, with his quarterback Jalen Hurts attempting a deep ball to A.J. Brown that was overturned by a flag. The play wasn’t the moment, but the aggression and confidence Sirianni displayed, suggested the Eagles came to play.

9: Jake Elliot’s 48-yarder

After Jalen Hurts threw an interception, the Eagles' defense got a stop, forcing the Chiefs to punt. A short drive later set Eagles kicker Jake Elliott up for a 43-yard field goal attempted, which was soon made a 48-yarder after a false start. Elliott, who had an up and down year in Philly, nailed the kick to make it 10-0, and all importantly, a two-score game.

8: Jordan Davis/Josh Sweat have a party at the QB

The Chiefs received the kick-off to start the second half and got a quick first down. The Eagles weren’t in any mood to let that trend continue, with defensive tackle Jordan Davis driving left guard Mike Caliendo into Mahomes’ face for a sack. Josh Sweat got to Mahomes on second down too, which led to a failed third down conversion and a punt, killing any hope of early momentum for KC.

7: Milton Williams forced fumble

The game was over by the time this happened, with the score sitting at 37-6 in the Eagles favor with just 9:51 left in the game. Still, the Chiefs were attempting a comeback, and the Birds were desperate not to give them a sniff. Up steps Milton Williams, who had been devastating all night, with a huge strip sack on Mahomes, leading to another FG and a 34-point lead.

6: Devonta Smith's 46-yard touchdown

With 2:47 left in the third quarter, the Eagles defense forced yet another stop against Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs. KC had been forced to go for it on 4th &5, but failed to make it. Many expected the Eagles to take the opportunity to grind down the clock, instead, they called a shot play, with Jalen Hurts unleashing a beautiful pass to Devonta Smith for a score and a 34-point lead.

5: Back-to-back sacks

The Eagles led by 10 points with eight and a half minutes left in the second quarter. If the Chiefs were to score, the game would’ve been very much alive. The Eagles answered the bell, with Josh Sweat and Jalyx Hunt combing to sack Patrick Mahomes twice on two plays and force a 3rd & 16 which may be mentioned later…

4: Zack Baun’s interception

It feels crazy to have such a huge play so low on our list, but even at this point, it felt like the Eagles were just slowly hammering down the nails in Kansas City’s coffin. With 1:49 left in the first half, the Chiefs were looking to go 94 yards to make it 17-7. Zack Baun had other ideas, stepping in front of Patrick Mahomes’ pass and picking it off, leading to an A.J. Brown touchdown.

3: Jalen Hurts’ pass to Jahan Dotson

With 6:39 left in the first, the Eagles were driving, hoping to get the first points on the board. They were faced with a 2nd & 11. The Chiefs’ DC, Steve Spagnuolo, dialed up one of his renowned exotic blitzes only to see Jalen Hurts read it perfectly and float a fade route down the right sideline to Jahan Dotson. The Eagles scored on the next play, and the rest, as they say, is history.

2: A.J. Brown touchdown

Set up by the aforementioned Zack Baun interception, the Eagles only had 12 yards to go for six points. The score was 17-0 at the time, a dominant position, but not an insurmountable one. The Eagles dialed up what looks some sort of mesh play, leading to A.J. Brown running wide open on a drag route. Hurts finds him and Brown tip toes into the end zone to go up 24-0, and that was basically the game.

1: Cooper DeJean’s pick-six

Our number five most-important moment of the game was just the set-up for this, the moment we think was most impactful to the Eagles winning Super Bowl LIX. Rookie corner, Cooper DeJean, read Patrick Mahomes’ eyes perfectly as he rolls to his right before throwing back across himself. DeJean made the pick and ran it back for six, cementing Philadelphia’s superiority on the night.
