Retirement

British heavyweight boxer Tyson Fury has announced his retirement from boxing, following his close defeat against Oleksandr Usyk. Stepping away from the ring has left many fans puzzled, wondering if this is the end for Fury.

One last dance?

The announcement comes "just two days after Eddie Hearn revealed Wembley had been reserved for Fury to fight Joshua in summer," reports Sky Sports.

Not the first time

Nevertheless, Fury announced his retirement before going back on his word and fighting again. In April 2022, Fury shared he would hang up his gloves after beating Dillian Whyte... Well, that never happened.

Same story in 2013

Back in 2013 following his schedule collapse with David Haye, Fury announced, "Hi everyone, I have officially retired from boxing," on X (formally Twitter). Despite his statements, he was back in the ring three months later.

Two big losses

Fury's downfall began in May 2024, when he lost his first fight against the Ukrainian heavyweight fighter Oleksandr Usyk.

Unanimous decision

The December rematch was yet another setback for the British fighter, who suffered another brutal loss against Usyk, with a unanimous decision of 116-112 in favor of the Ukrainian.

Retirement rumors

After the defeat, Fury stated his intentions to take some time off the ring, which sparked multiple retirement rumors. Fans were unsure what the future would hold for the former British heavyweight champion.

A warning?

Former world champion Duke McKenzie advised Fury to step out of the ring and consider retiring to safeguard his health.

"It's not over"

Despite the double upset against Usyk, Fury reportedly told close friends that "it's not over," and that he was far from hanging up the gloves.

A Wembly comeback

Promoter Eddie lined up a potential boat between Fury and Joshua at Wembley Stadium, according to Manchester Evening News.

Ready to perform?

Fury, now 36, has faced scrutiny over his physical readiness, with many fans pointing to a significant decline in stamina that has impacted his ability to compete at the highest level.

Boxing legacy

Nevertheless, the 'Gypsy King' is recognized as one of the most talented British fighters to step into a ring in the last two decades. His ability to 'tank' punches and push on round after round makes him one of the best.

Instagram

"I'd like to announce my retirement from boxing, It's been a blast. I have loved every single minute of it and I'm going to end with this - Dick Turpin wore a mask," shared Fury in a video posted on Instagram.
