The 24-time Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic has undergone surgery on his knee following his withdrawal from the French Open and looks set to miss Wimbledon in July.

According to Tennis 365, an MRI scan on his knee revealed a torn medial meniscus in the right knee after coming through a tough five-setter victory against Francisco Cerundolo.

In a statement, Djokovic said: "I played with all my heart and gave my all in yesterday's match, and unfortunately, due to a medial tear in my right knee, my team and I had to make a tough decision after careful consideration and consultation."

Due to his injury, it is unlikely the GOAT will play at Wimbledon on July 1st, and could potentially miss the Olympics for his nation Serbia.

Off the back of withdrawing from the French Open, Djokovic will lose his number-one ranking in the ATP, with Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz overtaking him if the Spaniard wins the tournament.

If Djokovic misses Wimbledon, the Serb will drop to 7,160 points in the ATP rankings. Depending on results in London, the GOAT could find himself out of the top five!

Before being injured at the French Open, Novak Djokovic hasn't looked like his dominant self in tournaments, failing to win a single event this year.

According to the ATP website, it's the first time since 2005 that Djokovic has failed to win a tournament at this point in the year after losing to some shock opponents.

After winning seven titles, including three Grand Slams in 2023, Djokovic has failed to make one final this year. He was knocked out in the last 32 of the ATP Indian Wells and ATP Masters in Rome.

Djokovic's winless year started at the Australian Open, where he lost to Jannik Sinner in the semi-final. He admitted then that his level wasn't good enough, and it's remained that way.

According to Eurosport, Djokovic said: "I was shocked with my level in a bad way. There was not much I was doing right in the first two sets. This is one of the worst Grand Slam matches I've ever played."

Injuries are naturally going to occur in any sport as you get older, but tennis is as demanding as it gets physically, and the Serb's results this year have shown he isn't invincible like he used to be.

This year and last year have seen Carlos Alcaraz (21) and Jannik Sinner (22) beat Djokovic in the latter rounds of tournaments and Grand Slams, and a new era of tennis looks to be upon the sports world.

The pair have both reached the semi-final of the French Open, while Casper Ruud and Alexander Zverev have also reached the final four. These names look to be the ones carrying tennis forward in the future.
