Gareth Southgate out: Who could replace the England manager?

A favourite of the English media, Howe has done a solid job at Newcastle since taking over their new Saudi-backed venture. The 23/24 season saw the Magpies take a step back, making his job slightly less secure. He has hinted he would like the job in the past, so perhaps now is the time.

Per The Sun, Potter has rejected opportunities to coach Ajax, Lyon and Leicester since he was fired by Chelsea in 2023. Given his track record at Brighton, he knows how to coach a football team, and given he’s out of a job, it makes a lot of sense.

Is this merely a pipe dream? Possibly, but if England were to secure one of the best managers in world football, they would surely win something (right?). Klopp has vowed never to manage another English side again, per Goal, but does that rule out the national team?

According to The Sun, Tuchel has thrown his hat in the ring to manage England following his dismissal from Bayern Munich. Tuchel has had some issues with team unity in the past so England risk losing the amicable changing room that seems such a key part of their success.

Poch’s firing from Chelsea came as a shock to everyone except the Argentine it seemed, but as Goal points out, “The manager has close working relationships with Harry Kane, Cole Palmer and Conor Gallagher,” which could help ease any teething problems he may have transitioning to international football.

Much like Frank Lampard, Gerrard would command respect for his legendary playing career rather than his success as a manager, which is nonexistent. Gerrard’s time as the Aston Villa manager was evidence of a manager without a clear plan or the tactical nouse to lead a side to victory, we hope he stays in Saudi.

Guardiola is very unlikely to manage England even is he leaves City at the end of the 24/25 season. He is considered by many to be the greatest coach the sport has ever seen, but after nearly two decades of dominating with the best teams in football, would he want to risk his reputation with an England squad seemingly allergic to winning tournaments?
