Hot takes

MLB Network analyst and former player Mark DeRosa had some clear advice for the New York Mets regarding what they should do with star first baseman Pete Alonso and his looming contract situation. All statistics are sourced from Baseball Reference.

Time to cut bait

In a segment on MLB Network, DeRosa said, “I don’t think you re-sign Alonso.”

One step further

While his comments about Alonso indicated the direction DeRosa thinks the Mets should go in, the MLB analyst doubled down by saying “it’s just not it… start over…”

History together

Mark DeRosa and Pete Alonso spent some time together on the baseball diamond in 2023, representing the United States in the World Baseball Classic. DeRosa was the manager of the American club.

Context

Alonso’s contract with the Mets is set to end at the end of this season. According to Spotrac, the slugger is making $20.5 million (£16,354,100 or €18,987,469) with New York in 2024.

Saying all the right things

Despite not having a long term pact in place, Alonso has said that he would love to spend his entire MLB career with the Mets. He told ESPN in February, “I definitely have envionsed me being a lifelong Met… I love New York, it’s a really special place for my family and I.”

Front office takes

New president of baseball operations David Stearns has also taken a politically correct approach when discussing Alonso’s future. He said on an MLB Network appearance, “I know how important he is to our fan base. We’re certainly invested in trying to keep Pete a Met and I’m hopeful that over time we’ll be able to work that out.”

Time is running out

While both sides have been diplomatic, there isn’t much more time before Alonso hits free agency this winter. There has been a lot of debate about what the Mets should do.

Moving on

Bleacher Report wrote in early June that New York figures to move several veterans before the trade deadline amidst a disappointing season. J.D. Martinez and Luis Severino appear to be primary focuses of transactions, but Alonso could also be on his way out the door.

Landing spots

Yardbarker took a stab at predicting some teams that Alonso might find himself with during the second half of the MLB season. They believe that the Chicago Cubs, Milwaukee Brewers, or even the New York Yankees could make a push for the power hitter’s services.

A darkhorse candidate

Sports Illustrated thinks that the Minnesota Twins could also be a surprise suitor for Pete Alonso.

Efforts to retain Alonso

CBS Sports reported in May 2024 that the Mets offered Alonso a seven-year extension in June 2023, worth $158 million. Allegedly, the first baseman turned the offer down.

A star from day one

Since breaking into the majors in 2019, Pete Alonso has been nothing short of sensational. He hit 53 home runs as a rookie, and his power hasn’t dwindled since. In full MLB seasons (not counting 2020), he’s hit at least 37 home runs each and every campaign.

New York should do what it takes to keep Alonso

CBS Sports pointed out three reasons why the Mets should re-sign the slugger to a long term deal. They posit that it will be virtually impossible to replace his production at the plate, and also say that he is the face of the franchise. CBS Sports believes that they should attempt to agree to a deal before free agency before other teams drive up the bidding.

More than just dollars and cents

The New York Post talked about how Alonso’s presence with the Mets is foundational to them being taken seriously as a franchise. Doing right by Alonso will keep New York relevant, which, in turn, might attract other free agents to the team down the road.

What do you think the Mets should do?

Should New York let Alonso walk, or try to recoup some assets for him at the trade deadline? Is it possible they sign the star to a long term deal? Let us know what you think by leaving a comment!
