Quarterback remains the single most important position in sports, and seems to only be growing in importance in recent times. That responsibility comes with all sorts of pressures and expectations, which most QBs aren't able to meet. Here is the definitive top 15 signal callers in the NFL right now!

Cousins was playing some of the best football of his career before he snapped his Achilles heel, completing passes at 69.4% and throwing 18 TDs to just five picks. Now he’s in Atlanta competing with Michael Penix Jr. but he is still an above-average QB in the NFL.

The highest-paid QB in the NFL on a per-year basis, Goff recently signed a four-year, $212 million contract per Yahoo Sports, but it’s tough to argue he is amongst the best in the league. He operates Ben Johnson’s system expertly, which is a skill in itself, and he deserves his flowers after a difficult start to his NFL career.

Rodgers could comfortably exceed this ranking when he gets back on the field, but his play in 2022 showed signs of natural regression. That, combined with his recently recovered Achilles heel, makes predicting his 2024 performance difficult, but he has the tools around him to return to his MVP form.

Stafford divides opinions in NFL media circles, with CBS Sports ranking him at 16 and The Ringer placing him eighth. For us, he falls right in between the two. His excellent arm talent gets him out of jail, but he still makes some mistakes. We are also unsure what the Rams are going to look like this coming season.

Many will balk at Geno Smith being the 11th-best QB in the NFL, but his on-field play and stats suggest he’s arguably even better. The Ringer has Smith eighth in success rate and seventh in Completion Percentage Over Expected, essentially making the hard throws. Smith’s play in 2023 was worse than the year prior, but he has a chance to bounce back.

Love was exceptional down the stretch in 2023, operating an offense comprised of young playmakers like a 10-year vet. Another year of similar play, and Love will be among the top QBs in the league.

Hurts finished fifth in Expected Points Added per play in 2023, per The Ringer, but he was ultimately held back by some untimely turnovers and a team collapsing around him. Hurts also seemed hampered by an injury last season that limited his running ability, with the talent around him, he could return to elite status this season.

Stroud put together one of the all-time great rookie QB seasons in 2023, and it wouldn’t be unreasonable to rank him much higher (CBS Sports has him at fifth). We feel to be a top-five QB you need to perform at that level for more than one season, so don’t be surprised if he shoots up these rankings through the season.

CBS Sports has Purdy ranked as their second-best QB, which is far too high for the Super Bowl runner-up, despite his stellar play. We were, admittedly, low on Purdy for too long, but there are at least six QBs better than him in the NFL. He’s still very good, though.

Dak finished the 2023 season with the second-highest EPA per play, leading the Cowboys to another NFC East title. His reputation as a thrower of untimely interceptions has clouded many fans’ views on Dak, who has been a near-elite signal caller since he entered the league.

Some of you may think we’re overrating Herbert here, The Ringer has him at number three, so there is certainly sentiment to have him even higher than five. Herbert is a processing machine who rarely makes mistakes, but as Steven Ruiz writes, he could take some more risks.

It almost feels sacrilegious to have Joe Burrow as the fourth-best QB in the NFL given how good he is, but given the players around him, it’s the only slot that makes sense for us. Last season was a write-off for Burrow, who played through injury to start the year before being placed on injured reserve. If he can stay healthy in 2024, the Bengals have a real shot.

The reigning MVP as the third-best QB in the NFL?! We hear you, don’t worry, we know how good Jackson is. We would happily place three or four of these QBs on a similar level, but where would be the fun in that? Lamar plays QB like no other and will keep the Ravens in the hunt for a Super Bowl for years to come.

Allen finished the 2023 season with 4,306 yards, 29 TDs, and 18 picks. Those stats combined with his 524 yards and 15 TDs on the ground put him in rare air as a passer. He takes unnecessary risks at times, but his aggressive style is what makes him so hard to stop.

We may be watching the greatest quarterback of all time in his prime. Mahomes plays the position with a poise and clarity that only Tom Brady can match. Mahomes has led the Chiefs to back-to-back Super Bowls despite having limited weapons around him, showcasing just how important an elite quarterback can be.
