What would a 2024 NBA championship mean for Luka Doncic’s legacy?
Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks have pushed their chips to the middle of the table, hoping that this will be the year that the franchise wins another championship. We’ll take a look at what a ring in 2024 would mean for Doncic’s NBA career. All statistics are sourced from Basketball Reference.
Since his first NBA season in 2018-2019, Doncic proved that he was one of the best talents in the league. He won Rookie of the Year in that campaign, averaging over 21 points, seven rebounds and six assists per game. His resume has been building towards the ultimate team goal since he stepped foot on an NBA court.
As his statistics indicate, there isn’t much on a basketball floor that Doncic can’t do, at least from an offensive standpoint. Former NBA coach Stan Van Gundy took praise one step further, as Marca’s website reported that he said “As strictly an offensive player, I think Luka is the best I’ve ever seen.”

However, some NBA analysts have wondered whether Doncic’s ball-dominant style can lead Dallas to where they want to go. The Ringer opined that “perhaps this extreme brand of so-called heliocentric play was suppressing the impact of his teammates, ultimately hurting the Mavs offense.”
As the unquestioned best player on the Mavericks, Doncic is going to have the ball the majority of the time. Winning an NBA championship, and putting the onus on the Slovenian guard to make the correct decision nearly every time, would validate Doncic’s basketball brilliance.
As The Ringer’s point illustrates, there might have also been a notion that Doncic was hard to play with, given that the majority of Dallas’ possessions start (and sometimes end) with the ball in his hands.

However, if Doncic and Dallas are able to win a title in 2024, it would put that notion to bed. Kyrie Irving has fit extremely well alongside Doncic this year, proving that the two stars can co-exist. Down the road, when other stars have the chance to come to Dallas to play with Doncic, they wouldn’t think twice considering that a championship blueprint was established in 2024.
Luka Doncic is 25 years old, and grabbing a title at this age would set him up nicely with regards to his place in NBA history, and how he could add to that in the future. Sourced from HoopsHype, NBA greats like Stephen Curry, LeBron James, Isaiah Thomas, Shaquille O’Neal, and even Michael Jordan all won their first titles at or after the age of 27.
The Western Conference is supremely competitive, so it might be difficult for Doncic to string off multiple titles if he does win his first in 2024. However, his vision and passing ability should keep him amongst the game’s elite even if his physical skills deteriorate. This could help him win additional championships down the road.

Doncic would be the youngest international star to win a title if Dallas wins it all in 2024. The NBA is already considered a global sport, but Doncic’s influence, especially as an English, Spanish, Slovenian and Serbian speaker (according to Bleacher Report) could take the popularity of the game to even greater heights.
