France captain Kylian Mbappe has suffered a broken nose following a collision with Austrian defender Kevin Danso during their opening match of Euro 2024, according to Sky Sports.

France head coach Didier Deschamps has described the incident as "very bad news" for his side, given the importance of Mbappe and that France's next game against the Netherlands is just days away.

Whether he is back for France's second game is in doubt, with Deschamps telling reporters, "We'll have to wait and see, the medical staff are dealing with it." His return will almost certainly mean he needs to wear a protective mask over his face, producing a series of funny memes from French fans.

One fan suggested Mbappe leans into his "Mbappe Donatello" nickname, relating to the Frenchman's vague resemblance to the famous Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Other fans suggested Mbappe wear a mask in the image of Emmanuel Macron after Mbappe spoke out against the rise of Marine Le Pen and the rise of the 'far right' in France.

Sports stars wearing masks is not new, with other famous players wearing them in the past having suffered broken noses or orbital bone injuries, one of the most famous was Victor Osimhen.

Former NBA MVP and Philadelphia 76er Joel Embiid also famously wore a face mask during the 2022 Eastern Conference semifinals series after suffering a facial fracture and concussion following a collision with Pascal Siakam, per ESPN.

Way back in 2014, LeBron James was seen wearing an all-black carbon fibre mask after suffering a broken nose. The mask became so iconic, the NBA attempted to ban LeBron from wearing it, per Business Insider.
