15 things you didn’t know about Chelsea superstar Cole Palmer

Since joining Chelsea, Cole Palmer has completely taken the Premier League by storm, becoming Chelsea's best player and pushing them into title contention. For all the media hype, here are some things you might not know about the England ace.

Palmer is actually of Afro-Kittitian descent. His father emigrated from St Kitts and Nevis in 1960, and his great-grandparents came to England during the Windrush generation.

Palmer's football inspiration comes heavily from his father's influence during his childhood. His dad was an engineer but spent 20 years playing Sunday league football in Manchester for Blackboy FC. His mother is a dyslexia assessor.

Despite coming through the Manchester City academy, Palmer supported Manchester United when he was growing up. According to the Manchester Evening News, Palmer said: "Yes, when I was growing up, I was a United fan."

While supporting Manchester United as a fan, Palmer admitted his idol is a United hero. He said: "What a player. When I was growing up, I used to watch all the football, and the one that sticks in my mind is Rooney. He has been my footballing hero since I was a little kid."

Palmer likes to showcase the heritage of his mum and dad's side on his Nike boots. All of his boots sport the flags of England, and St Kitts and Nevis.

The shiver celebration has become synonymous with Palmer's extraordinary rise, but the celebration didn't initially come from him. Aston Villa forward and Palmer's former Man City youth teammate Morgan Rogers created it first. According to TalkSport, Palmer said: "My boy Morgs did one for Middlesbrough, so I told him I'd do it too if I scored."

After his penalty masterclass in Chelsea's exciting 4-3 win over Tottenham, Palmer has scored 12 penalties in 12 attempts and now holds the longest 100% conversion record in Premier League history.

In Chelsea's 4-2 win against Brighton in September 2024, Palmer scored the fastest Premier League hat-trick in Chelsea's history, scoring three goals in just nine minutes and 48 seconds.

In the same game, Palmer scored four goals in the first half in a remarkable 19 minutes and 57-second spell. According to CNN, four other players have scored four goals in a game, but he is the first to score four in the same half.

The Chelsea star played for NJ Wythenshawe when he was growing up, and his standout performances led to Man City and United wanting his signature. Ultimately, his family thought City's pitch was better, and he joined the club at under 8.

One of his hometown team coaches, Graeme Fowler, gave his insight on Palmer as a kid: "He was miles above everyone brain-wise. His technical ability was really good; I had a lot of good technical players, but his brain was just so advanced for a footballing brain at a young age; it was incredible."

As one of the best players in the world at 22, Palmer has one lofty ambition in mind that he wants to achieve: "The Ballon d'Or, that's the one everyone wants to win, I wish." The Chelsea ace finished 25th in the race at the 2024 event.

In the Euro 2024 final against Spain, Palmer equalized for England in the 73rd minute after firing the ball past Unai Simon into the bottom left corner. His goal in Berlin is the only goal scored by an Englishman in a major tournament final on foreign soil.

Away from the football pitch, Palmer has latched on to his new fame by creating a 'media representation services' company to deal with external revenue. He has lucrative sponsorships with Boohoo and Nike, which he signed in 2023.

Did you know that Cole Palmer was privately educated when he was at school? He attended St Bede's College in partnership with the Manchester City Academy. According to the St Bede's website, the school follows a modified timetable to allow for football training.
