Are Harry Kane’s days with England numbered?

It's another tournament and another missed trophy for England captain Harry Kane, who came agonisingly close to silverware in England's 2-1 loss to Spain in the Euro 2024 final.

In his social media post reflecting on the tournament, Kane said he was "heartbroken" but admitted he wasn't done fighting for more trophies with England in the future.

According to the Mirror, Kane wrote: "Ultimately we fell short of our target and will have to live with that, but as we always do, we will pick ourselves up, dust ourselves down, and be ready to fight again in an England shirt."

Despite finishing as joint top scorer at the tournament, Kane had his difficulties on the pitch and was substituted in all but two of the games. He was so poor against Spain in the final that Gareth Southgate took him off in the 60th minute for Ollie Watkins.

Kane, England's record goalscorer, admitted he came into the tournament with an injury he had suffered with Bayern Munich, so should the striker have played as much as he did?

Ultimately, fit or not, Harry Kane hasn't been able to help deliver England a major trophy in his career, so are his days numbered as an England player?

At the age of 30, Harry Kane is quickly becoming one of the senior players in a team, and by the time the 2026 World Cup rolls around, the England captain will be nearly 33 years old.

With Kane being nearly 33 at the World Cup, a new manager may play a youthful team that can stretch opposition defences, just like how Ollie Watkins made an impact for England in the semifinal and final with Kane on the bench.

Although there is no clear replacement for Kane in the England team, strikers do famously come out of nowhere and start banging in goals. Kane is one of them. However, a new England manager may fancy Cole Palmer or Phil Foden as the 'false 9' frontman.

Speaking of managers, no one has been more loyal to Kane than Gareth Southgate, having been his captain at all four major tournaments and playing in every single game (25), according to Transfermarkt.

With the announcement of Southgate leaving England, a new manager may want to implement a new style that doesn't suit Kane. If Jurgen Klopp were to be named the manager, his high-press style of play wouldn't fit the captain, and his deep-lying approach as a forward.

If fit, Kane will probably be taken to the 2026 World Cup under England's new boss, but are his days as captain and first name on the team sheet done after a dismal Euro 2024?
