McEnroe crossing the line?

John McEnroe is known for speaking his mind and sometimes crossing the line. The former tennis star was recently criticised for a comment about French Open champion, Iga Swiatek.

French Open Final

McEnroe was commentating on the recent French Open for American broadcast NBC Sports when he made the comments about Swiatek’s recent sponsorship deal with makeup brand Lancome.

“A little makeup”

The comment in question was, “You think if they offer her enough, Lancome, maybe she would consider throwing on a little makeup for the right price?” Raising eyebrows amongst the tennis community.

Social media reacts

According to The Daily Express, fans reacted angrily on social media, with one writing, “That [the comments] was sickening. It's time for McEnroe to be GONE as a commentator. See ya.”

“Disrespectful and disappointing.”

Another fan wrote, “During this dominant performance from Swiatek, there was a moment in the broadcast where McEnroe questioned if she would "throw on a little makeup" before the trophy presentation. Disrespectful and disappointing. Would he say this in a men’s match?”

Swiatek’s cheeky response

Swiatek, who went on to win the French Open for the fourth time, posted a picture of herself on X (formerly Twitter) with the trophy after the final with the caption, “Mercy Paris. You're my favorite place to play, smile and wear some nice outfits once in a while”. Perhaps a nod to McEnroe’s comments.

Official complaints

According to The Mirror, some television viewers were so angered by McEnroe’s comments, they lodged official complaints with NBC.

McEnroe’s priors

In an interview with NPR in 2017 McEnroe found himself in hot water for making what some viewed as unnecessary comments about Serena Williams. McEnroe pointedly called her the best women’s player in the world as, “if she played the men’s circuit, she’d be, like, 700 in the world”.

Not the first time

Unfortunately, it is not the first time Swiatek has found herself involved in a controversy around make-up. In 2022, she was asked, “Outside of the court, when you go to a party, do you use make-up?” The Polish champion responded simply, “OK. Thank you.”

McEnroe’s goodbye

The final at Roland Garros also provided McEnroe a chance to say goodbye to NBC, who are losing hosting rights of the tournament from next year, per The Mirror. The seven-time Grand Slam champ told viewers, “NBC, thank you so much. You gave me my first job as a broadcaster. I appreciate that.”
