But who stands out among the greatest Scottish players of all time? Here’s our list of Scotland’s football legends.
Currently playing for Liverpool, Andrew Robertson is known for his excellent crosses and endless work rate. The 29-year-old started his pro career at Dundee United, where he was picked up by Hull City in 2014, before making a big move to the Reds three years later.
An icon of Aberdeen, Manchester United and Leeds United, Gordon Strachan has made an impact at every club he played for. The same applies to his international career, which encompassed 51 appearances for Scotland, as documented by Transfermarkt.

Part of the heroic 1967 European Cup-winning Celtic side, Jimmy Johnstone was a truly talented player who was voted the club's greatest player of all time in 2002.
Dave Mackay filled his trophy cabinet at Hearts and Tottenham Hotspur, winning the 1963 European Cup Winners’ Cup with the latter club. Mackay passed away in 2015, aged 80.
One of the best Scottish players of his generation, Billy Bremner was known for his leadership. He was an icon of Leeds United and a key figure during the club's most successful spell in history.

A Liverpool icon, Graeme Souness won three European Cups and five English titles with the Reds. With 59 Scotland appearances on top of that, Souness deserves to be on this list.
Like Souness, Kenny Dalglish is a big part of Liverpool's successful history. He scored the only goal in the 1978 European Cup final, a trophy which he would lift three times in his career.
Tommy Burns spent the biggest part of his career at Celtic, amassing no less than twelve trophies for the club.
Alan Hansen started his career in Scotland, before joining Liverpool in 1977. It would prove to be a successful move, with Hansen making countless appearances for the Reds until his retirement in 1991.
One of the best and most productive Scottish strikers ever, Ally McCoist scored no less than 355 goals for Rangers and 19 goals for Scotland. After his playing career, McCoist went on to manage Rangers from 2011 until 2014.
A very good centre-back in his time, Alex McLeish made 77 appearances for Scotland and played for Aberdeen and Motherwell. With the former club, he won the 1983 European Cup Winners' Cup, beating Real Madrid in the final.
Showing his class as a winger for Rangers, Davie Cooper won countless trophies with the club. The Scotsman also served his country, making 22 appearances and scoring 6 goals.
