Countdown!

The countdown has begun for the 2024 European Championships, where many talented players will try to lead their country to the coveted trophy. Here are the best players to look forward to!

Luka Modric

Modric at 38 is a better midfielder than most, so we will be once again keeping an eye on the Croatian maestro in what could be his last major international tournament. Could Croatia create the perfect ending for maybe the best player in their history?

Arda Guler

Guler is off to an incredible start at Madrid, scoring six times in just 373 minutes of football, per Transfermarkt. Turkey has a dangerous squad, with Juventus’ Kenan Yildiz and Guler leading the way.

Jude Bellingham

Per Oddschecker, Bellingham is currently the second favourite to win the Ballon d'Or, not bad for a 20-year-old. England will be relying on Bellingham to connect the defence to the attack, as he will probably play deeper for his national side than at Madrid. England are one of the big favourites for the Euro title, and players like Bellingham are a big reason why.

Dusan Vlahovic

Vlahovic has been plying his trade at Juventus over the past two and a half seasons and hasn’t set the world on fire. Still, his potential is through the roof, which explains his €81.6 million (£69.5 million/$88.5 million) transfer fee in January 2022, per Daily Sports.

Xavi Simons

Simons has been on European football’s radar for some time. In the past two seasons, he has shown why, racking up impressive stats during loan spells in the Netherlands and Germany. This may not be a great Dutch team, but if players like Simons fire, they will be dangerous.

Warren Zaire-Emery

Zaire-Emery has become a mainstay in the PSG starting lineup during the 23/24 season, despite being just 18. Given the talent available to the French, he won’t be guaranteed a starting position, but considering his qualities, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him have a huge impact regardless.

Cristiano Ronaldo

Ronaldo turned 39 earlier this year and was still able to rack up 33 goals and 11 assists in the Saudi league, per Transfermarkt. The Euros will be a much higher stand than the SPL, but those statistics suggest Ronaldo still has plenty to offer Portugal.

Mykhailo Mudryk

You may laugh, but perhaps what Mudryk needs most is to get away from the media spotlight and play in a completely different environment. Per Transfermarkt, the Ukrainian has six goal contributions in 18 games for his country, which is not a bad record. Could he turn things around this summer?

Jamal Musiala

Musiala has emerged as one of the best young players in the world, with Transfermarkt ranking him as the eighth most valuable player in world football. The German squad is packed with world-class players, but Musiala could be relied on to provide some creative spark.

Dominik Szoboszlai

The Hungarian midfielder flattered to deceive at time for Liverpool in his first season at Anfield, but the talent is immense. At only 23, he is one of Hungary’s most important players and will need to play well to get out of a group including Germany, Scotland, and Switzerland.

Bukayo Saka

The great debate in English football currently is based on who is better, Saka, Foden, or Cole Palmer. In the Premier League, it’s a tough call, but on the international stage, Saka has so far outshone his fellow left-footers. With 11 goals and seven assists in 32 international appearances so far, per Transfermarkt, Saka is a key part of England’s plans.

Nico Williams

The Spanish squad isn’t as good as the World Cup-winning squad from a decade ago, but with players like Williams, they are still a threat to anyone. There is a reason clubs like Chelsea and Liverpool are willing to pay the €50 million (£42.5 million/$71 million) release clause for his signature, at least according to rumours from the likes of ESPN.

Rasmus Hojlund

Hojlund was on fire during Denmark’s European qualifying campaign, scoring seven (plus one assist) in his eight appearances, per Transfermarkt. Hojlund is another player who could benefit from some time away from club duties, having had an up-and-down first season in England.

Lamine Yamal

Spain’s squad hasn’t been formally announced, so usually it would be a stretch to include a 16-year-old on a list like this. Yamal isn’t just any 16-year-old. His coach at Barcelona, Xavi, has described him as having, “flashes of Messi in him,” per the BBC. If he can live up to those expectations, La Masia may have unearthed another gem.

Kylian Mbappe

Kylian Mbappe is just 25, yet he is only four goals away from equalling the most goals scored in World Cup history, per FIFA. Now, we understand the Euros aren’t the World Cup, but when it comes to big tournaments, there have been few that have performed as consistently as Mbappe.
