Athletes who tragically died in August 2024

August 2024 was a sad month for sports, with several athletes passing away. We have compiled a list of the most notable names.

Former Leicester City manager Craig Shakespeare passed away after a battle with cancer on the 1st of August. Shakespeare is notably known for being Claudio Ranieri's assistant in Leicester City's unthinkable Premier League title win in 2016.

The former manager played in the lower leagues of English football and even had one game as England's assistant manager under Sam Allardyce.

Duane Thomas, the running back who helped the Dallas Cowboys win a Super Bowl, died on the 4th of August, aged 77. The Houston Chronicle confirmed there is no news as to how he passed.

In his only Super Bowl-winning campaign, Thomas led the NFL in rushing touchdowns and would have won the NFL Super Bowl MVP by a large margin had he not stopped speaking to the media.

Russia's Vyacheslav Ivanov, one of the most accomplished Olympic rowers of his generation, died on the 5th of August, aged 86. There is no confirmation of the cause of death.

The rower was the first athlete to win three Olympic gold medals in consecutive Games in the single skulls event, winning at the 1956, 1960, and 1964 Olympics.

Five-time Olympic velodrome cyclist Daniela Larreal died after choking on some food, according to the Guardian. She was 50.

Larreal was one of Venezuela's best-known athletes, representing the country at the 1992, 1996, 2000, 2004, and 2012 Olympic Games. She was living in exile in the United States because of her stance against the government.

Frank Selvy, the man who scored an NCAA Division 1 record of 100 points in a game, died on the 13th of August, aged 91. ESPN confirmed the cause of his death hadn't been revealed.

At Furman College, he averaged 41.7 points as a senior. In the same season, he scored 100 points against Newberry, hitting 41 field goals and 18 free throws. He was the number one pick in the 1954 NBA Draft, playing nine seasons and registering two All-Star appearances.

Al Attles, the man nicknamed 'The Destroyer,' is a Golden State Warriors legend, spending 11 seasons there as a player and 13 years as a coach, winning the 1975 NBA Championship.

His number 16 jersey was retired by the franchise and was enshrined in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2019. He died peacefully in his home, surrounded by his loved ones. He was 87.

After a hard-fought battle with pancreatic cancer, former England manager Sven Goran Eriksson passed away on the 26th of August, aged 76.

The Swedish manager led England to two major tournament quarterfinals and enjoyed a historic period in Italy, winning the Serie A title, two Italian Cups, and the European Cup Winners' Cup.

Uruguayan footballer Juan Izquierdo tragically died of "cardiorespiratory arrest associated with his cardiac arrhythmia" after collapsing on the pitch in Club Nacional's Copa Libertadores game against São Paulo.

The defender was rushed to hospital, but his condition worsened over the days he was there. Izquierdo was only 27 years old and died on the 27th of August.
