Bold NFL predictions for the 2024 season

With preseason football about to start, the NFL season proper is just around the corner, meaning it’s time to make some bold predictions for 2024.

We have very little doubt Caleb Williams will be a very good (at least) NFL QB, especially given the talent around him in year one. However, we predict by week 4 there will be at least one article written by a major NFL publication titled something like “Is it time for the Bears to start worrying about Caleb Williams?”

Bleacher Report has “New kickoff rule sees surge in special teams scoring,” as one of their bold predictions, and that may be the case as the season goes on, but we think it will take some time, with teams not willing to risk a big return, we will continue to see kickers aiming for touchbacks… for now.

Mike Tomlin is, without a doubt, a great NFL head coach, having never led his team to a sub .500 season. Now, he has a pair of QBs in Russell Wilson and Justin Fields with very different ceilings and very different floors. After a series of mediocre starts, Wilson will get benched and rumors of clashes between him and Tomlin will start.

San Francisco is one of the most talented teams in football, but as Give Me Sport writes, “the field in the NFC got a lot stronger during the offseason,” with the Lions, Eagles, Cowboys, Packers, etc all looking strong, it won’t take much for the Niners to slip. That, plus the recent record of losing Super Bowl teams, Kyle Shanahan’s team could be in trouble.

This doesn’t seem especially bold considering Los Angeles has Justin Herbert as QB and Jim Harbaugh as head coach, but bear in mind, the Chargers went 5-12 last season. That’s half the number of games required to reach the playoffs last year.

Love is tied fifth in MVP odds currently per Oddschecker, so maybe not the boldest of predictions, but ahead of him are Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, C.J. Stroud, Joe Burrow, and he’s tied with last season’s MVP Lamar Jackson. For Love to win, he will have to perform as he did in the playoffs all season, which won’t be easy, but he has the ability to do so.

Per Pro Football Reference, Devonta Smith trailed teammate AJ Brown by 25 receptions last year (106 to 81), this season, we think that could be flipped. Smith has been unguardable at the Eagles’ training camp, according to reports, and we could see a scenario where he emerges as WR1 under Kellen Moore’s new offensive structure. Last season, 135 was the number to beat, not out of touch for Smith.

The Indianapolis Colts look ready to build on a solid year in which Anthony Richardson barely played. Now, the QB, who rookie wide receiver Adonai Mitchell described as a “created player,” will be unleashed on the league. If he settles quickly, the Colts look good enough to challenge for the number one seed, especially with some weaker teams in their division.

Lamb needs to add another 200 or so yards to his 2023 tally to take him beyond Calvin Johnson’s record of 1,964, per Statmuse. Given his size, speed, and natural ability to get open, we don’t see any reason why this shouldn’t be possible for the Dallas Cowboys stud, whether he does it or not is a different matter, but the potential is there.
