Three sports

Hardy was the first athlete in 19 years to star in three college sports, playing defensive tackle for the Fighting Irish football team, right field on the baseball team, and a role player in the basketball team.

National champion

His main sport was football and had a breakout campaign in Notre Dame's 1966 National Championship victory, making 79 tackles and four pass breakups, earning First-Team All-American honors.

NFL Draft

Due to ongoing back injuries, Hardy stayed on at Notre Dame for four years and had 33 tackles in his final season with the Fighting Irish before being selected as the seventh pick in the 1968 NFL Draft by the New Orleans Saints.

San Fransisco

Hardy immediately moved from Saints without suiting up for them and joined the San Fransisco 49ers as compensation.

Pro career

He spent his professional career with the Niners, the Green Bay Packers, and the San Diego Chargers. It's fitting that he spent most of his career in California, having been born in Oakland in 1945.

45 pro games

According to ProFootballReference, Hardy appeared in 45 professional games, starting 12 of them. He was listed at 6ft5 and 276 pounds.

A legend

Hardy is survived by his son, Danny, daughter, Shannon Kuhl, and sisters Mary and Barbara. He was a true legend at Notre Dame.
