The team that needs to help Angel Reese beat Caitlin Clark in the future

At the college level, Angel Reese defeated Caitlin Clark numerous times and even won a National Championship, a feat Clark couldn't complete while playing for Iowa.

However, since arriving at the WNBA stage, Clark has beaten Reese and led her team to the playoffs, finishing sixth in the standings.

Reese and the Chicago Sky finished tenth in the WNBA regular season with a disappointing 13-27 record and missing the playoffs for the first time since 2018.

The disappointing record doesn't paint the complete picture of a terribly unlucky season for Reese and the Sky. They were swarmed by injuries, roster movement, and personnel changes, and they will want to change that next season.

Reese suffered a season-ending wrist in September, Chennedy Carter missed a stretch due to COVID-19, and the Sky lost their best three-point shooter, Marina Mabrey, in a mid-season trade with the Connecticut Suns.

Along with Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese has been one of the most impactful players in the WNBA this season, becoming a first-year All-Star and dominating on the boards.

According to the WNBA stats website, Reese led the league in rebounds per game (13.1), beating out MVP A'ja Wilson, who averaged 11.9 per game.

Reese has been a dominant presence on the boards and has become the cornerstone for potential success in Chicago in the near future. However, she will need a team that can perform in the playoffs to compete with Clark.

The Mirror US reports that Chicago has several free agents to deal with, including unrestricted free agents Isabelle Harrison, Brianna Turner, and Diamond DeShields.

Realistically, Reese and the Sky will have to look for external talent to improve next season to compete with Clark and other WNBA superstars. With a $923,625 (£708k, €846k) cap space (the third biggest in the WNBA), they should have no trouble trying to lure talent.

The Sky needs to hire a new head coach after shockingly firing Teresa Weatherspoon. They must also address their three-point shooting to ensure Reese and their young core can develop.

Indiana Fever guard Kelsey Mitchell would be the perfect player to help Reese get the better of Clark. It would make the Fever worse and the Sky much better. Mitchell is an unrestricted free agent who averaged 19.2 points this season. She is an elite shooter and has scored 20 points or more for seven games in a row.

Atlanta Dream guard Aerial Powers shot 39% from three in the regular season and has proven to be a solid bucket-getter in ten seasons in the WNBA. With Reese being the presence she is, Powers can make an impact and score in bunches in the right situation.

Despite being 36, Sami Whitcomb is an established veteran in the WNBA with a career three-point percentage of 36%. With two WNBA titles and years of experience, Whitcomb could serve as a vital locker-room presence as Chicago aims to shift the culture.

WNBA champion Kelsey Plum will be available in free agency and bring a winning culture to the Chicago Sky. Plum is an elite playmaker and averaged 17.8 points in the regular season. She shot 36% from beyond the arc this season and could be the perfect player for Reese and the Sky.

This off-season for the Chicago Sky will be imperative for the team's future and the success it will enjoy with Angel Reese as its star player.
