The Toronto Raptors player, and brother of Michael Porter Jr. (Denver Nuggets), has been banned for life by the NBA for being involved in lucrative sports betting, which is absolutely prohibited.
Jontay Porter was being investigated by the NBA itself, for making more than 1,000 bets between 2021 and 2023, while playing for the Raptors 905 of the 'G-League', in which they would have moved millions of dollars, according to Shams Charania from The Athletic.
NBA regulations strictly prohibit NBA, G-League or WNBA players from making any type of bet.
The investigation into Jontay Porter, according to Charania, would have increased in two games played on January 26 against the Los Angeles Clippers and on March 20 against the Sacramento Kings, when bets on the player's worse performance skyrocketed suspiciously in 'Draft Kings', a well-known online betting house.
Indeed, the player's performance was lower, since in both matches he would have had health problems, playing just over 7 minutes in both games.

Furthermore, according to NBC News, when Porter was on the Raptors' G League affiliate, he placed at least 13 bets on NBA games, using an associate account. "Wagers ranged from $15 to $22,000," according to the NBA.
"A league investigation found that Porter violated rules by disclosing confidential information to sports networks, limiting his own participation in one or more games for betting purposes, and betting on NBA games," shared the league in an official statement.
"There is nothing more important than protecting the integrity of the NBA for our fans, teams, and everything related to our sport, which is why Jontay Porter's flagrant violations of our gaming policies carry the most severe punishment," he says. Adam Silver, commissioner of the NBA.
As it is, Jontay Porter, at 24 years old, will never be able to set foot on a basketball field again in his life. A promising NBA career that was cut short due to foul play.
The NBA is sending out a clear message to anyone who wishes to follow Porter's footsteps. These are the types of scandals that damage the league's image and generate unnecessary controversy.
