"It was a gift he gave me. I tried to take advantage of it, I did everything possible to squeeze the most of out it. The truth is although I did many things, I did nothing to become the player that I already was when I was little," shared Messi.
The Argentine forward began his career at home (Argentina) playing for his home club Newell's Old Boys, he would later join Barcelona's youth team at the age of 13.
Messi is the most decorated football player of all time and has won it all. He claimed a total of 45 trophies after helping Argentina lift the 2024 Copa America, according to La Vanguardia.
He is also regarded as Mr. Ballon d'Or after the former Barcelona forward cashed in a total of eight awards.
A professional goalscorer and a creative genius would be some terms used to describe Messi. He still holds the record for the most goals (474) and hat-tricks (36) in La Liga, according to Transfermarkt.
"People came to watch me. I didn't realize it, but I began to understand that as I grew older," quotes ESPN. Yet, it's not always been nice and easy for the Argentine. The former PSG star lost three consecutive finals before lifting the Copa America in 2021, after defeating Brazil.
What makes Messi great? His ability to overcome and not give up in moments of complete despair. It all boils down to the love for the sport and his unmatched passion for the ball.
"When I was 3 or 4 years old, I was not aware of the World Cup and all the titles that were being played. I simply played because I loved the ball... It was my hobby. I spent all the time kicking and looking for someone to play with. I was born with it," shared Messi during an interview.
