More Than Words: When players fight the fans

It's no secret that players/athletes can become frustrated and reach boiling points while competing at the top level of their sport.

In a lot of cases, their frustration can be taken out on their fellow teammates or, more commonly, the opposition they are facing.

However, at some points in sports history, players have gone past or beyond the field/court of play, taking their anger out on the fans there to watch them compete.

Let's look at five instances where players and fans have attacked each other.

Eric Cantona is one of the greatest players in Premier League history. Despite that, the French international was banned from football for eight months after 'Kung fu' kicking a Crystal Palace fan after being sent off.

According to the BBC, Cantona kicked a fan named Matthew Simmons for abusing him with racist slurs as he walked off the pitch. As reported by Bleacher Report, Cantona said, "I have a lot of good moments, but the one I prefer is when I kicked the hooligan."

The most infamous clash between players and fans came in November 2004, when the Indiana Pacers players clashed with the Detroit Pistons players and fans in what was known as 'Malice at the Palace.'

According to the History website, after a hard foul from Ron Artest on Detroit's Ben Wallace, Artest sat on the scorer's table as the players calmed down, but a fan launched a drink at him, sparking the guard and his teammates to jump in the crowd and fight the Detroit fans. Artest was banned for the remainder of the season.

Former Houston Rockets player Vernon Maxwell was known as a hothead in the NBA. However, in 1995 he punched a fan in the face after reports the fan heckled him over his wife having a miscarriage, as reported by Bleacher Report.

The fan in question was Steve George, who made it clear he was taking it to the police, saying: "Absolutely, I'm pressing charges. I was hit by an NBA player in the face." According to the Sportster website.

Ty Cobb is seen by many as one of the most incredible baseball players of all time. However, that didn't stop him from having his fair share of controversial moments, like when he attacked a handicapped fan.

After Cobb was heckled by a fan with two fingers, the baseball star rushed into the stand and assaulted him. Subsequently, Cobb was suspended from baseball, as covered by Bleacher Report.

In November 1999, on a cold wintery day, the Denver Broncos defeated the Oakland Raiders. The Broncos fans started launching snowballs at The Raiders bench, resulting in Lincoln Kennedy making his way up to the stands to confront them.

ESPN reported that Kennedy climbed a six-foot wall up to the stand and punched one of the fans in the nose, splitting it and leaving him with blood pouring.
