The men in charge

With all seven head coaching vacancies now filled, we thought it would be a good time to take a look at all 32 teams and rank their head coaches. Given there are numerous first-time head coaches on the list, it won’t be easy as there is some projection here, but we’ll give it a go anyway.

32: Brian Schottenheimer - Dallas Cowboys

We don’t really understand what the Cowboys are doing with this one. After Dallas let Mike McCarthy walk, they hire the guy who was working under him. He could prove us wrong, obviously, but given how the Cowboys regressed last year, we would have looked for an external candidate.

31: Kellen Moore - New Orleans Saints

Moore did a good job as the offensive coordinator for the Eagles, helping them win Super Bowl LIX. Now, in New Orleans, he will have to prove himself as a head coach. By all reports, he is smart, and has good relationships with his players, but he has also been fired twice already in his young career. This will be interesting to follow.

30: Brian Callahan - Tennessee Titans

Last year was a mess in Tennessee, so it’s probably fair Callahan gets another chance. However, we weren’t impressed with what we saw. The pressure is on, already in just his second season.

29: Brian Daboll - New York Giants

We have no idea how Daboll kept his job in New York after the farce of last season. The only reason he isn’t lower on this list is his impressive 2022 coaching performance. If he can rekindle some of that magic, perhaps the Giants can win a few more games. If not, this is just a wasted season for the Giants.

28: Jonathan Gannon - Arizona Cardinals

Gannon has been OK as head coach of the Cardinals so far, but we also haven’t seen much to suggest he can go beyond that level. Arizona has holes on their roster that need filling, and they may have a head coaching vacancy open up soon enough, too.

27: Liam Coen - Jacksonville Jaguars

Honestly, we have no idea how this could go, which is why this could seem a little low. Coen is smart, and led the Bucs to one of the best offenses in football last season, but he’s only had a couple of seasons as an OC in the NFL.

26: Raheem Morris - Atlanta Falcons

Morris is an impressive defensive mind who earned a second shot at a head coaching role. We just don’t know if he has what it takes. Some guys are best suited to being coordinators and can’t make the step-up. Vic Fangio for instance, and we’re worried Morris could be in that bucket. Like everyone on this list, he could well prove us wrong in 2025.

25: Dave Canales - Carolina Panthers

While the Panthers showed some signs of life in the latter stages of 2025, they still finished 25th in EPA/Play, per SumerSports. For a guy with a reputation as an offensive genius, that’s not good enough. There is a lack of elite talented in Carolina, which doesn’t help, but the best coaches get more with less.

24: Todd Bowles - Tampa Bay Buccaneers

As Ben Solak wrote for ESPN before the 2024 season, “Bowles has coordinated some great defenses in his day, but he has always underwhelmed as a head coach.” The season didn’t change our minds too much on Bowles, who is by no means bad, but we’re not sure if he’s ‘the guy’ either.

23: Pete Carroll - Las Vegas Raiders

We’re being cautious with the Raiders heading into 2025 as we don’t quite know how it’s all going to look. They have zigged while others in the league have zagged by hiring two extremely experienced coaches in Pete Carroll and Chip Kelly (OC). The end of Carroll’s tenure in Seattle was suggestive of a coach who is past his prime, but maybe he has one last hurrah in him.

22: Shane Steichen - Indianapolis Colts

The Colts have gone exactly .500 in Steichen’s two seasons in charge. They hitched their wagon to Anthony Richardson, which was a risk that hasn’t paid off so far. Still, we were hoping for more from a coach who had a reputation for being somewhat of a quarterback-whisperer.

21: Ben Johnson - Chicago Bears

It would not shock us if Ben Johnson proves himself to be a great head coach, making this ranking look incredibly low. However, like all first-time head coaches, he needs to prove himself before we anoint him as one of the best in the league.

20: Aaron Glenn - New York Jets

You could flip Johnson and Glenn if you like, but we think they are very close as candidates and could both turn around their teams rapidly. What we are unsure of, is whether Glenn will get the personnel required to compete in the AFC any time soon.

19: Zac Taylor - Cincinnati Bengals

The Bengals are just too talented for Zac Taylor to let them get off to the awful starts they keep having in recent years. At some point, the blame has to be portioned to the head coach, and we will be keeping a close eye on Taylor this season as we have a feeling he could be wasting a good roster.

18: Mike Macdonald - Seattle Seahawks

Seattle went 10-7 in Macdonald’s first year in charge, narrowly missing out on the playoffs. It may seem like a good first season for the former Ravens’ DC, but Pete Carroll was fired for winning just one game fewer. 2025 is a big year for Macdonald in our eyes.

17: Mike Vrabel - New England Patriots

We get the Vrabel hire in New England, and we can see it leading to some short term successes, but we also thought this was a great opportunity for a fresh start. Instead, the Pats went back to the well again in search of recapturing the Bill Belichick magic.

16: Kevin Stefanski - Cleveland Browns

Stefanski has mostly done a great job in Cleveland, winning Coach of the Year twice, per ESPN. It’s rare that a team goes 3-14 and the head coach stays on, so we expect him to be in the hot seat in 2025. Great head coaches also rarely oversee a collapse like that.

15: Mike McDaniel - Miami Dolphins

The Dolphins crumbled in 2024 after Tua went down (again) with concussion. That’s a real issue they will have to address at some stage, perhaps by just having a better backup solution. When Tua was healthy, their offense was humming, and we know how dangerous this team can be. We want to see them compete better with the best teams, though.

14: Sean McDermott - Buffalo Bills

At what stage is reaching AFC Championship games and losing to the Chiefs not good enough? For us, it’s getting close. The Eagles are a great team and demolished the Chiefs in the Super Bowl. When the Bills played them, they looked tense and nervous and didn’t have answers, is that simply not good enough coaching?

13: Sean Payton - Denver Broncos

The top half of this ranking is tricky, as there are some great coaches in this league. Sean Payton is one of the best coaches of the 21st century and did a great job with a rookie Bo Nix last season. Now, we want to see more improvements and hopefully a more varied passing attack.

12: Jim Harbaugh - Los Angeles Chargers

Jim Harbaugh turned the into an 11-win team after going 5-12 the year before. We know Harbuagh is a great coach given his track record, and we think, if they get it right this offseason, the Chargers could contend for the NFC title.

11: DeMeco Ryans - Houston Texans

DeMeco Ryans led the Texans to the sixth-best defense on an EPA/Play basis, per SumerSports, and a playoff spot in 2024. Otherwise, we didn’t see the Texans kick on how we hoped after entering the year as a Super Bowl contender. A nice playoff win over the Chargers was followed by a disappointing loss to the Chiefs, can they go further this year?

10: Matt LaFleur - Green Bay Packers

The Packers made the playoffs once again under Matt LaFleur’s leadership. He continues to be one of the best head coaches in football, but, like some others on this list, needs to show improvement in 2025.

9: Kevin O'Connell - Minnesota Vikings

Kevin O'Connell head been dealt a rough hand over the past two seasons, with serious injuries at QB impacting his team. He found solutions in both instances, going 14-3 this year. He has to show he can coach in the playoffs, though, as losing in the wild card round 27-9 simply isn’t good enough.

8: Mike Tomlin - Pittsburgh Steelers

Were Mike Tomlin fired, he would be swooped up by almost any team in the NFL, but at this point, his competence may be hurting the Steelers. They need a re-set at quarterback, and Tomlin is simply too good a coach to let that happen. He’s an incredibly impressive coach and shows it season after season.

7: John Harbaugh - Baltimore Ravens

John Harbaugh once again led a very good Ravens team in 2024, with the offense being nearly unstoppable at times. Unfortunately, they once again came up short in the playoffs. The AFC playoffs are a gauntlet, but one the Ravens haven’t been able to navigate in some time.

6: Dan Campbell - Detroit Lions

We are ranking Campbell on his performances in the last two seasons, but it will be 2025 where his mettle will really be tested. He lost both coordinators this offseason, who were among the best at their positions in football. 2024 ended in disappoint, losing at home to Washington, can they go further in 2025?

5: Dan Quinn - Washington Commanders

This could be a huge overreaction to one season from Quinn and the Commanders. It’s difficult to say much negative about Quinn’s performance, however, as he led his team to the NFC Championship in year one. The Commanders need to up their talent level, but we think they have the right guy in charge.

4: Kyle Shanahan - San Francisco 49ers

It all fell apart for Kyle Shanahan this season, with injuries catching up with his team eventually. Still, his record has always been somewhat feast and famine, but the feasts have been excellent, coming just short of Super Bowl champs twice. Could this be an Andy Reid in Philly situation where the real success comes after a change of scenery?

3: Sean McVay - Los Angeles Rams

The Rams came a couple of plays short of beating the Eagles in the divisional round of the playoffs, no one else played them especially close at all. Time and time again we think the Rams are down and out, only for McVay to turn things around, whether that’s in a game, or over the course of a season.

2: Nick Sirianni - Philadelphia Eagles

If you can’t grasp that Nick Sirianni is a good coach at this stage, we don’t know what to tell you. He has gone 48-20 in regular season games, and 6-3 in the postseason. That includes two Super Bowl appearances and one of the most dominant victories we have seen for some time in the big game. Players love him, and it shows as they go out and win for him time and time again.

1: Andy Reid - Kansas City Chiefs

Reid wasn’t able to complete the three-peat against the Eagles in Super Bowl LIX, but if that’s the biggest negative we have against him, he’s probably a pretty good coach. We hope he is willing to let Patrick Mahomes and the offense open up a little more in 2025, but we can’t argue with the winning.
