Elite of the elite

Making it to the NFL as a quarterback is a statistical improbability for most players, regardless of how good they are. The combination of athleticism, arm talent, and cognitive ability is scarce, but when it all comes together in one neat package, it’s beautiful to watch. With that being said, let’s take a look at which QBs have been playing the best so far in 2024! All stats are sourced from Pro Football Reference.

16: Russell Wilson

The only reason Wilson isn’t higher on our list is because of how little he has played. So far, we have seen Wilson revert to his Seahawks glory years as if the last two seasons he played in Denver didn’t happen. Mike Tomlin made a brave call to have Wilson start when Justin Fields had been playing well, we thought he had got it wrong, it turns out Tomlin might know more about football than us…

15: Kirk Cousins

Cousins has played exactly like Kirk Cousins through 10 weeks of the 2024 NFL season. He has games where he looks borderline-elite, only to stink up the joint a week later. His career is a series of weird inconsistencies, and so far his time in Atlanta is no different. Still, he’s the best QB the Falcons have had for some time and should lead them to the playoffs.

14: Jordan Love

Love has missed some time this year, meaning his stats don’t look as gaudy as some on this list. He is, however, continuing to play at a high level when he is on the field. His style of play will lead to interceptions at times, due to his willingness to take risks in tight windows, that shouldn’t knock him as much as other QBs as his aggressiveness is what makes him so good.

13: C.J. Stroud

It’s going too far to say Stroud is having a ‘Sophmore Slump’ but he hasn’t kicked on from his rookie season, yet. He is still playing at a high level and getting it done without his best pass-catching weapons, so there’s certainly no doubting his ability, we just know he can play a level above where he has been.

12: Brock Purdy

As Nick Shook wrote for NFL Network recently, “Purdy's peak performances have been spectacular, but like the rest of his team, he's lacked consistency this season.” He is making some great plays at times, including a beautiful floated throw to Christian McCaffrey with multiple defenders in his face on Sunday, it’s the bad plays he needs to cut out.

11: Jalen Hurts

Jalen Hurts may never be a consistently elite pocket passer, but he also doesn’t need to be. Per NEFLO, Hurts ranks fourth in the league in EPA/Play, in part due to his ability with his legs and his efficiency with the infamous Tush Push, and also in part due to his ever-improving passing ability. He is up to 10 rushing TDs already this year, alongside his 12 through the air.

10: Kyler Murray

Kyler Murray is having arguably the best season of his career so far, continuing to produce big plays with his arm and his legs while keeping the turnovers to a minimum. If he continues at this level, we will have no choice but to move him higher up our rankings.

9: Jared Goff

Jared Goff’s five-interception performance against the Texans certainly knocked his stats on the year, even though they still look more than respectable. Goff’s efficiency in Ben Johnson’s offense is incredible to watch, we just know that the system is doing a significant amount of the work. It’s no knock on Goff, however, as many couldn’t do what he does.

8: Matthew Stafford

Stafford has had to put the Rams’ offense on his back at times this year, and has done it well when asked. We just don’t think he’s playing as well as he did last year. With both Puka Nacua and Cooper Kupp now healthy, things will get easier for Stafford, and we’re excited to watch his play down the stretch.

7: Jayden Daniels

There’s a chance we are getting swept up in the hype around Daniels after what has been an incredible start to his NFL career, however, we do think he’s legit. He has remained consistently composed in the pocket, hitting receivers all over the field and only running when he has to, or it was the play design.

6: Baker Mayfield

We really didn’t think Baker Mayfield had this level of consistency in him a year or two ago. He has proven us, and multiple NFL teams, wrong by producing spectacular play after spectacular play with the Bucs. Although he was on the losing side against the Niners on Sunday, he didn’t deserve to be, having put his team in a position to win through sheer force of will.

5: Justin Herbert

Per Sportsnaut, Justin Herbery, “averaged nearly a first down per attempt (9.1 YPA), passed for a touchdown, and rushed for another while avoiding turnovers,” against the Titans last Sunday. He isn’t asked to carry the offense under Jim Harbaugh, which makes his job easier, he just makes so few errors, throwing only one interception in 2024 so far.

4: Patrick Mahomes

This has not been a vintage Patrick Mahomes season so far, yet he is still performing like one of the best QBs in football. The past two weeks, against two good defenses, he has thrown for just shy of 600 yards and three TDs while also cutting out the ugly picks he had been throwing earlier in the season. The Chiefs are 9-0 in large part due to Mahomes.

3: Josh Allen

There are a few who think more highly of Josh Allen than us and the 2024 NFL season is showing us why, he ranks second in NEFLO’s EPA/Play metric and has mostly cut out his tendency to throw the occasional pass to the opposition. We can’t wait to see how he deals with the Chief’s defense on Sunday, as that could well be an AFC Championship matchup.

2: Joe Burrow

Burrow has had to put the Bengals on his back this season and has responded with what looks to be the best season of his career. So far, he has thrown for 24 TDs to just four picks, adding another TD with his legs. The Bengals aren't good, but it's nothing to do with Burrow.

1: Lamar Jackson

So far in 2024, Lamar Jackson has completed 199/288 passes (69.1%) for 2,669 yards, 24 TDs, and just 2 picks, all while adding 538 yards and another two scores on the ground. This is becoming one of the greatest seasons we’ve ever seen by an NFL QB, and will surely net him another MVP award.
