Three-time world champion boxer, Israel Vázquez, dies aged 46

Mexican boxer, Israel Vázquez, has passed away aged 46, per an announcement by the World Boxing Council president Mauricio Sulaiman.

In the same statement by Sulaiman, it was confirmed that Vázquez had been battling cancer before he died.

Sulaiman also added, “Thank you champion for leaving such a special mark. You will always be Magnifico.”

Vázquez was known for his brutal and aggressive style, winning over crowds around the world during his career. He is perhaps best known for his long-running rivalry with Rafael Márquez, who faced off four times between 2007 and 2010.

Vázquez was eventually forced into retirement in 2010 following a series of injuries, including a detached retina, per the Guardian. He finished with a record of 44 wins (32 KOs) and five defeats in his 49 professional fights.

One of the sport's most famous trainers, Freddie Roach, told BoxingScene that Vázquez was, “one of the best boxers I ever had the privilege of working with,” following the news of his death.

George Kambosos, the former unified lightweight champion, wrote his own tribute, “RIP legend. Was an honour to have met you, absolute warrior of the game.”

Another former champion boxer, Billy Dib, who recovered following his own battle with cancer, wrote on social media, “Heartbroken to hear about the passing of Israel Vázquez after his courageous battle with cancer.”

Dib then added, “He was not only a champion but also a true warrior in and out of the ring. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, and all who admired him.”

Vázquez finished his career as a three-time super bantamweight world champion, holding the IBF title from 2004 to 2005 and the WBC belt from 2005 to 2008.
