Sneaking up on history

LeBron James has some of the most impressive accolades in his name in sports history, but he’s on the verge of topping a list that isn’t the most flattering to be on. We’ll take a look at what the distinction is, and what type of company he finds himself in.

Brick by brick

LeBron James should be able to set another NBA record within the first game or two of the new season. With just six more misses from the field, James will become the all-time leader in off the mark attempts in league history.

Passing the baton

James will pass Kobe Bryant on the all-time list, the latter of which missed 14,476 shots during his illustrious career.

A respected list

Despite being on the precipice of locking down a record that seems embarrassing, James has passed some of the most decorated names in NBA history to do it. According to StatMuse, John Havlicek, Elvin Hayes and Karl Malone round out the top 5 players who missed the most shots in their career.

Additional notes

For those wondering, Michael Jordan has the ninth-most missed field goals in NBA history, with 12,345. Other greats like Dirk Nowitzki, Carmelo Anthony, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Vince Carter round out the top 10.

Banner nights, sort of

According to StatMuse, 23 is fittingly the most number of shots he has ever missed in an NBA game. It happened twice very early on in his career; once in 2005, and another time in 2006.

A deeper dive

Essentially Sports called out that nearly half of the points James scored over the 18,000 mark have come in the paint. Since he entered the league in 2003, his physicality and ability to get to the rim have allowed him to get easier buckets than a lot of other stars in the last 20 years.

Consistency is key

It might surprise some to learn that LeBron James has never led the NBA in field goals attempted, despite being on the verge of setting the record for most missed shots. The highest he has ever finished in any given season in shots attempted is second, according to Basketball Reference.

Safe from history’s wrath elsewhere

James is fortunate to be nowhere near close to the record for all-time missed free throws in a career. According to StatMuse, the Los Angeles Lakers star is fifth in history, but won’t catch the likes of Wilt Chamberlain, who bricked 5,805 foul shot attempts in his career.

Untouchable?

Marca, ESPN, Stadium Rant and others have written about the remote chance that anyone would have of breaking LeBron James’ career NBA scoring record. Along the same lines, it would seem like James’ impending missed shots mark might also be impossible to top, considering the length of time he has been the focal point of his team’s offense.
