NFL Power Rankings: A look back at the Championship games

With all eyes turning towards the Super Bowl, we thought it would be a good idea to take a look back at all the teams that played during the NFL's Championship weekend. We're going to rank all the teams, take a look at the season just gone, and give our view on what they should be looking to do in the offseason to take that next step!

The Commanders played a near-perfect game against the Lions 10 days ago, but weren’t able to repeat their performance on Sunday. The Eagles ran roughshod on the Commanders to the tune of 55 points and seven rushing touchdowns. Washington fans can finally feel hopeful for the first time in a long time, Jayden Daniels has the potential to be truly elite, and Dan Quinn won over his players in year one. 

It’s hard to appreciate what Washington did this season after years of incompetence and mediocrity (at best), they transformed themselves in one season. Dan Quinn and Jayden Daniels were the faces of the turnaround and deserve their flowers. The rest of the organization deserves credit too, however. For the first time in a long time, there is genuine optimism here.

Surround Jayden Daniels with as much talent as you possibly can. Be bold, make a trade, or spend heavily on a veteran wideout. Do whatever it takes. If Tee Higgins is available, give him as much cash as you can. Trey Smith too. The offense was elite without many elite players, just imagine what it can be with them.

Just brutal. Once again, the Bills come up short in the playoffs. There has been plenty of discussion about what Josh Allen should have done with the game on the line. We just don’t see Allen as the reason for this loss. Once again, Sean McDermott’s defense failed in the playoffs. The Chiefs scored 32 points on Sunday, their most in a game this season. That’s where this game was lost.

Josh Allen once again put the Bills on his back this season, carrying his team to an AFC Championship despite not being surrounded by elite weapons. Buffalo will rue some of their early-season losses that prevented them from having the one seed, as that would have been huge.

We asked this question this last year too: when do the Bills think about moving on from Sean McDermott? We don’t think they will, and it would be harsh considering how close they have been to glory. Per SumerSports, the Bills’ defense was only 13th in EPA/Play, McDermott is a defensive coach, in our opinion, that’s not good enough.

The Chiefs just know how to get it done. It’s remarkable how similar this team feels to the peak of the Brady/Belichick Patriots. They have learned how to become inevitable. Patrick Mahomes had a good, but not great year, the defense isn’t anything special whether you look at basic or advanced stats, yet when it comes down to it, they get the job done.

We will be providing plenty of content ahead of the Super Bowl, so this is just a taster. The Chiefs will be relying on their defense in New Orleans to shut down the Eagles’ explosive run game. Steve Spagnulo will sell out with blitzes and loaded boxes to shut the Birds down. If they don’t, we’re not sure that they can keep up.

If the Chiefs win a third Lombardi in a row, we wonder if we might see some big-name retirements. Travis Kelce will have one year left on his contract, per Adam Teicher for ESPN, and Andy Reid is turning 67 in March. It’s hard to imagine a more fitting end for those two than a fourth Super Bowl ring.

The Eagles take the number one seed after their destruction of the Washington Commanders. They set numerous records on Sunday, including the most points, and rushing touchdowns in an NFC Championship game. They have a roster absolutely stacked with talent, and they released their passing game too. Now, they are seeking revenge.

The Eagles have the best defense in football and will need to be playing at their best to beat Patrick Mahomes. Two years ago, the Birds couldn’t do anything against the Chiefs’ offense in the second half of the game, a trend they will need to reverse this time around. Offensively, it will all be about how they deal with the blitz.

The Eagles are not only set to compete for the Super Bowl this year, they are locked and loaded to compete for years to come. If they win the Lombardi, don’t be surprised if Lane Johnson retires, which would leave a huge hole at right tackle, but we don’t trust anyone more than the Eagles to find a suitable replacement. Re-signing Zack Baun is the other offseason priority.
