Lineker's discontent

Gary Lineker has voiced his discontent after Belgium's first match at Euro 2024 against Slovakia.

Belgium squandering chances

Slovakia took an early lead, but Belgium created numerous chances to equalise, missing all of them.

Loïs Openda

Belgium manager Domenico Tedesco brought in Loïs Openda in the second half to avoid a first loss for the Belgians, and the RB Leipzig striker was vital with a fine run on the left flank.

Storming passed his defender

In a duel with Slovakian defender Vavro, Openda outpaced his defender towards the opponent's goal.

Lukaku scoring

Openda followed up with a good cross from the left to Lukaku, who kept his composure and looked to have equalised for Belgium. Or did he?

Halil Umut Meler

The Belgian players were stunned when referee Halil Umut Meler had to go and look at the VAR images for an alleged Openda handball.

No goal

Their amazement became even greater when the Turkish ref disallowed the goal for handball by Openda, whose arms were always in a natural position.

Lineker disagrees

Former England icon Gary Lineker clearly disagreed with the ref, calling it a "b u l l s h * t decision" on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Chris Sutton

"That is scandalous. It is ridiculous, it really is," Chris Sutton shared Lineker's view on BBC Radio 5 Live. "Openda doesn't intentionally push the ball into his path. That is harsh. In the Premier League, that goal would stand."
