Here we go again

There are only a few certain things in life, and it feels like the Kansas City Chiefs playing in the Super Bowl is one of them.

In rarified air

NFL quarterbacks and coaches are primarily judged on how they perform in big games. Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid have fared quite well in recent years, and have a chance to add to their already impressive resumes in Super Bowl LIX. We’ll dissect what another Super Bowl victory would mean for their legacies. All statistics were sourced from Football Reference.

Mahomes makes it happen anywhere

Coming into the 2023 NFL playoffs, Patrick Mahomes had played every postseason game before the Super Bowl at home. Last season, the Chiefs had to win two playoffs games on the road to make it to the big game. Mahomes and Kansas City met the challenge en route to their third ring.

Anytime, anywhere

The road to Super Bowl LIX this season went through Arrowhead Stadium, but the aura of invincibility surrounding the team has never been brighter.

Mahomes makes it happen with anyone

In a similar vein, Mahomes has continued to win without the level of support he’s received in the past from his offensive teammates. A victory against Philadelphia would be his third Super Bowl triumph without Tyreek Hill, who Mahomes had the benefit of playing with early in his career.

Rotating cast of characters

This helps catapult Mahomes’ accomplishments way up the historical list, considering that he had to elevate the play of an average-at-best cast around him.

The Tom Brady chase is alive and well

Tom Brady won his seventh Super Bowl against Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs at the culmination of the 2020 NFL season. It was said at the time by the likes of Al Michaels that no one would ever have a chance to match that ring total, let alone surpass it.

The road to seven or eight

However, if Mahomes was to win Super Bowl LIX, he would have his fourth championship, at just 29 years old. If he plays another 11 years until age 40, it’s not crazy to think Mahomes could get four more championships to eventually pass Brady.

Reid’s reinvention should be celebrated

The roster differences between this year’s Chiefs team and prior editions have been previously touched on, but give Andy Reid credit for playing to the strengths of the current roster.

Playing to his strengths

Instead of airing it out like he might have just a couple of years ago, Reid has adjusted by relying on a solid run game and a stout defense.

Points for defeating identical opponent twice

As Sports Illustrated has depicted, there’s a narrative in the NFL that it can be hard to beat the same team multiple times in a season. The Chiefs have beaten the San Francisco 49ers twice in the Super Bowl, and will look to do the same thing against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Stamping dominance

If Kansas City is able to pull this off, Reid would deserve a ton of credit for finding a way to motivate his players, who might otherwise come into this game thinking they have the upper hand. In addition, the Eagles come into the Super Bowl as hot as anyone, as running back Saquon Barkley has run over and around everyone in his path.

Belichick sees Reid in rear-view mirror

Before Super Bowl LIX, Andy Reid finds himself 22 victories (regular season and playoffs) behind Bill Belichick on the all-time wins list, according to ESPN. Belichick will not be a head coach in the NFL in 2025, meaning that Reid will have an opportunity to gain on the former New England Patriots boss. It seems likely that Reid will catch him sooner rather than later.

Mahomes and Reid maximize Kelce in late stages

As Bleacher Report and many others have opined, Travis Kelce’s on-field play has declined in recent seasons. With that being said, Mahomes and Reid have still been able to get great production from him throughout the postseason. It can be difficult to placate a legend whose abilities are diminishing, but Kansas City hasn’t had much trouble with that.

Does Reid go out on top?

There’s been no report of Andy Reid considering stepping down after the Super Bowl, but it’s fair to wonder how many more seasons he might want to be a part of. He’ll be 67 years old in March, but might want to spend more time seeing the prime of Mahomes’ career unfold.

Mahomes' historic MVP collection

Mahomes has already won three Super Bowl MVP’s, and could very well add a fourth award to his ledger. Only Brady has won more.

Immortal State Farm commercials

It’s practically become a part of every NFL broadcast these days, but the State Farm commercials that Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid appear in are extremely popular. It’s hard to remember a quarterback-coach tandem that had a more iconic advertisement run than this duo, which solidify their place in history as pitchmen as well.
