Is Tyson Fury vs Anthony Joshua the most highly anticipated fight in British boxing history?

Former heavyweight boxing world champion Anthony Joshua held up his end of the bargain at the weekend, defeating Francis Ngannou in the second round to set up a fight with Tyson Fury.

Joshua showcased the difference between a novice boxer and a former world champion, having knocked Ngannou down twice before delivering the knockout blow, according to Sky Sports.

According to the Mirror, Joshua said: "I'll fight Fury in his back garden, it does not matter to me; whenever, whoever, it doesn't matter to me."

Whilst Joshua has held up his end of the bargain, Tyson Fury still needs to beat Oleksandr Usyk in May to ensure the pair fight for the undisputed heavyweight crown.

According to Talk Sport, the heavyweight division hasn't seen an undisputed champion since April 2000 when Lennox Lewis held all of the belts.

Usyk and Fury will fight it out to become the first undisputed heavyweight champion in 24 years, but Joshua and Fury fighting for it would be the biggest fight in British boxing history.

The lack of undisputed champions in the division is a sign of the talent within the ranks, and Joshua and Fury have been at the forefront of the greatest generation of heavyweight boxers.

As reported by Sky Sports, heavyweight boxing is creating some of the best fights in history, and a 'Battle of Britain' showdown between the pair could be the answer to bringing back boxing to the masses.

Joshua and Fury have been teasing this fight for nearly four years, with the pair reportedly signing a contract to fight in 2021, but Fury's trilogy with Deontay Wilder got in the way.

According to Sky Sports, the pair couldn't agree on terms in 2022 because 'Joshua didn't offer Fury anything,' and in 2023, Fury's promoter Frank Warren claimed that 'Joshua didn't want the fight.'

In 2022 and 2023, a fight between the two Englishmen was a no-contest to most, with Joshua going through the worst form of his life, losing twice to Oleksandr Usyk, who took his belts away.

According to Box Rec, since losing to the Ukrainian, Joshua has won four fights in 13 months, gradually stepping up his opponents and performances, perfectly setting himself up for a bout with Fury in the best form of his career.

After a poor performance against Francis Ngannou in October 2023, in which he was knocked down by the UFC star but eventually won, Fury insists he plans to fight Joshua before he retires.

The Guardian reported that Fury has a five-fight plan that entails fighting Oleksandr Usyk and Anthony Joshua twice before finishing his career off in a rematch against Ngannou.

Sky Sports reports that if Fury and Usyk have a rematch after the initial bout, the IBF belt will become available for Joshua and Filip Hrgovic to fight for, giving Joshua the chance to become a three-time world champion before fighting Fury.

With that in mind, the boxing world could be waiting until 2025 for the 'Battle of Britain' to finally take place.
