A big family occasion

Gina-Maria Schumacher, daughter of Formula 1 icon Michael Schumacher, has just married her long-term partner Iain Bethke at a private ceremony in Mallorca on Saturday 28 September. The question on everyone’s mind is: did her legendary father attend?

Was Michael there?

Though his condition remains cloaked in mystery since his tragic 2013 skiing accident, rumors have emerged that Schumacher, while not publicly seen, may have been present at this special family event, according to GPFans.

The rest of the family were there

Gina-Maria's wedding, which reportedly took place in secret with a close-knit group of friends and family, including brother Mick, mother Corrina, and uncle Ralf (pictured), according to Daily Sports. It was a reflection of how the Schumacher family has shielded their private lives from the media.

A F1 legend

Despite the fanfare surrounding Michael's legendary career, the family has remained resolute in maintaining strict privacy regarding his condition. Schumacher, once a seven-time world champion who conquered the Formula 1 circuit with 91 victories, has been confined to his Swiss home, under the care of specialists since his severe head injury a decade ago, as per the Guardian.

Family carrying on

Speculation has always surrounded Schumacher’s health. Although his wife Corinna and children, Gina-Maria and Mick (pictured), have carried on with their lives, there is a persistent belief that Michael could still be involved in their lives, even if away from the spotlight.

Mystery around his condition

While some reports suggest he may be in a minimally conscious state, others believe his condition might have improved enough to allow for participation in intimate family events like this one, though always behind closed doors.

"I miss Michael every day"

While little is known about Michael now, the most insight fans have been given is from the Netflix produced Schumacher documentary, where Corinna stated: "I miss Michael every day, but it's not just me who misses him: the children, the family, his father, everyone who is close to him. Everyone misses Michael, but Michael is here in a different way, but he is here and I think that makes us find strength."

"Private life is private life"

"We are trying to continue as a family in the way that Michael would like and we are continuing with our lives," Corinna told the documentary. "Private life is private life, that is what he has always said. It is very important to me that he can continue enjoying his private life as much as possible. Michael always protected us, now we are protecting him," she concludes.

Nobody knows

It was a significant occasion for the Schumacher family, but whether Michael witnessed his daughter's wedding – physically or in some other way – remains a mystery at this point, like so much else about the family.

Fight for privacy

And though the Schumacher family has been steadfast in their request for privacy, the interest in the racing legend remains, and the family has been subject to a number of attempted breaches in recent years.

Blackmail attempt

In June 2024, three men were arrested for attempting to blackmail the Schumachers, threatening to leak information about the family to the media unless they were paid €15m (£12.5m, $16.5m), per Euro Weekly News.

AI 'Interview'

In May 2023, the family won a legal case over Die Aktuelle after the German magazine promoted a cover story with the words: "Michael Schumacher, the first interview!". The interview itself was an AI fabrication.
