2022 in review: When Canada's women's hockey team won gold at Beijing!

2022 was a notable year for Canadians when it comes to sports. One event that had nearly all the Canucks smiling was when the Canadian women's hockey team won the gold at the winter Olympics held in Beijing in February.

The Canadian women's hockey team beat the US 3-2 on February 16, 2022 in Beijing. Beating their American rivals made the team's victory oh so much sweeter!

It was the team's first Olympic title since 2014, so there was a LOT of excitement!

It was an emotional win for the entire team. Here we see Erin Ambrose react after defeating Team United States.

Gold medal winners Laura Stacey and Emma Maltais celebrated during the medal ceremony.

Natalie Spooner beamed as she showed off her gold medal.

It was a spirited game, and the US put up a good fight, but Team Canada was determined to take the win.

Canada was looking for redemption after losing the shootout to the US in the 2018 Olympic final.

Team Captain Marie-Philip Poulin (pictured on the right) scored two goals, one of which was her third career Olympic game-winning goal.

Poulin said that the victory was entirely a team effort, telling CBC News, "We celebrate each other's success, we want to succeed and to be honest it just showed tonight."

Poulin continued, "From line to line, people were dialled in. We did it and we're very happy."

Sarah Nurse claimed one goal and an assist during the game.

By doing so Nurse beat out Canadian Hayley Wickenheiser for the most points earned in a single tournament with 18.

Nurse was confident her team would win, telling CBC News, "That was the longest game of hockey I've ever played and waking up this morning we knew that we were going to finish this game with a gold medal if we just stuck to our plan, stuck to our process."

"Coming off of 2018 and having that silver medal, it felt like the weight of the world on our shoulders. And having this gold, it's gonna feel as light as ever," Nurse told CBC News.

Team Canada's Captain Marie-Philip Poulin also told CBC News she was incredibly proud of her teammates, "I'm so, so proud of this group, from players to staff we've stayed united since 2018."

"It would've been easy to run away but to be honest we put our head down, we went to work and it really showed today and I'm so so proud of this group."

Sarah Fillier an Olympic rookie and only 21 years old was filled with emotion over the win.

CBC News reported that Fillier (first on the left) had tears in her eyes as she spoke abou the win to the news outlet. "It's insane. I can't stop shaking. I just stopped crying."

Fillier continued, "This is like a dream come true and it's been a really long four years and to do it with the girls on that team, there's nothing more special than that."
