Six Nations return

The Rugby Union Six Nations returns for England at the weekend, with Steve Borthwick's side facing Italy in Rome to kick the tournament off.

Losing Farrell

Things aren't looking too promising for the England team for this campaign, losing their captain and leader Owen Farrell, who's stepped away from international rugby to prioritize his and his family's well-being.

Poor previous tournaments

England's last three Six Nations have been ones to forget, losing three of their five fixtures in each of the last three tournaments, finishing fourth in 2023, third in 2022, and fifth in 2021, as reported by Sky Sports.

Most successful

Despite their previous poor runs, England is the most successful team since its first tournament in 2000, winning seven competitions.

Ranking their best

Here are England's seven Six Nations wins ranked from worst to best!

2020 Six Nations (7)

The COVID pandemic Six Nations was a mess, with the tournament being majorly disrupted, finishing in October after it started in February 2020.

Level with France

As reported by The Independent, the tournament was England's worst win to date, finishing level on points with France (18) and narrowly deciding the competition by having a better points difference than the French (England +44 and France +21).

2011 Six Nations (6)

England won the Six nations in 2011 for the first time since 2003, missing out on the Grand Slam title, losing to Ireland on the last day 24-8.

Not so convincing

England's only real dominating victory that year was over Italy, failing to beat France, Wales, or Scotland by more than ten points in their pursuit of the trophy. England's Toby Flood was the Six Nations' top scorer with 50 points, according to Six Nations Rugby.

2000 Six Nations (5)

The opening edition of the Six Nations in 2000 was won comfortably, dismantling Ireland, Wales, and newcomers Italy, winning the tournament with a points difference of +113.

No competition

Despite England's dominance, no other team created a major threat in the pursuit of their title. England lost to Scotland on the final day, missing out on the Grand Slam and giving the Scots their only victory of the tournament, as stated by the BBC.

2001 Six Nations (4)

England destroyed the competition yet again in 2001, winning the first-ever back-to-back title of the Six Nations. However, they lost on the final day to Ireland, denying them the Grand Slam.

Biggest points margin

Their 2001 win saw them pick up their largest points margin, scoring 229 points and conceding 80 with a difference of +149. England's Jonny Wilkinson was the top scorer in the tournament with 89 points, and Sam Greenwood scored the most tries with six, according to The Telegraph.

2017 Six Nations (3)

England marched into the 2017 Six Nations under Eddie Jones with a 14-game winning streak, having not lost since the 2015 Rugby World Cup.

18 game wins

According to Six Nations Guide, England added to their streak, winning four more games, making it 18 victories in a row. On the last day, Ireland ended the streak, beating England 13-9. England still won the Six Nations, ending with 19 points to Ireland's 14, who finished second.

2016 Six Nations (2)

England won only their second Grand Slam in the Six Nations in 2016, winning all five games and edging out close victories against Scotland and Wales, as covered by BBC Sport.

Champions before the end

England was crowned champions on 13 March with a game to play, winning their first Six Nations since 2011. Owen Farrell was the tournament's top scorer with 69 points.

2003 Six Nations (1)

ESPN Cricinfo reported the greatest year in England's Rugby history was 2003. England won their first-ever Six Nations Grand Slam, scoring 173 points and only conceding 46 points.

A catalyst

England's victory in 2003 was their third Six Nations victory in four years. However, 2003 will be remembered for bigger reasons. After winning the Grand Slam, later in the year, England won the Rugby World Cup, making it one of the most historic seasons in Rugby Union history.
