Where does Southgate rank among the all-time England greatest managers?

Gareth Southgate's stint in the most high-pressured job in football is over after eight years of some extreme highs and almighty lows.

His time as England's manager was filled with memories to last a lifetime, from Kieran Trippier's free-kick at the 2018 World Cup and Jude Bellingham's overhead kick against Slovakia at Euro 2024.

According to Essentially Sport, only four managers have a higher win percentage than Gareth Southgate as England's manager – Fabio Capello, Sir Alf Ramsey, Glen Hoddle, and Ron Greenwood.

Capello had a win percentage of 67%, Sir Alf Ramsey and Glenn Hoddle's was 61%, and Ron Greenwood's was 60%, tying Southgate's record.

Despite the other managers having better-winning records, Southgate delivered when it mattered, reaching a quarter-final, a semi-final, and two European Championship finals.

Only Sir Alf Ramsey has one up over Southgate, being the man who led England to that famous World Cup victory in 1966. Greenwood led England to Euro 1980 and the World Cup in 1982, and Capello only reached the round of 16 at the 2010 World Cup.

Southgate's goals-against and goals-per-game ratio was the second-best among previous England managers, conceding -0.7 goals per game and scoring 2.1.

Walter Winterbottom's (1946-1962) England team scored on average 2.8 goals per game and conceded -1.4, while Fabio Capello also averaged 2.1 goals and conceded -0.8.

According to Sky News, only Glenn Hoddle's England team (1.8) scored more goals than Southgate's teams (1.7) at major tournaments, but Hoddle didn't have the same success after being knocked out of the 1998 World Cup by Argentina in the round of 16.

Southgate is near the top in every major category against other England managers of the past, and provided the country with a renounced pride in the footballing world.
