England fans praised for 'exuberant atmosphere' against Denmark following violence with Serbs

The Mirror reports England and Denmark fans were praised by police in Frankfurt for creating a "great football festival with an exuberant atmosphere" in the run-up to the 1-1 draw between the nations.

Following trouble and violence from England's opening group game against Serbia, the clash against Denmark was put on 'high risk.' However, the only England fans arrested were fans driving under the influence of alcohol on E-scooters.

It was the same old story in the clash against Serbia, with English fans once again involved in football-related violence before their Euro 2024 opener in Gelsenkirchen.

The Sun has reported a local police officer told them, "The English turned up and we saw everything being thrown - chairs, tables, glasses - you name it."

Set-upon Serbian fans retaliated in a similar fashion, with the German police officer telling The Sun, "Serbs hit back and chased the group down the street and one was caught."

The Daily Mail has reported up to 200 German riot police were in the area and were able to snuff out the violence before it became too ugly.

That did not stop at least one England fan from receiving what German police described as a "nasty wound to the back of his head."

The Daily Mail reports up to six individuals were arrested following the violence. It is suggested that all of the detainees are Serbs, but that is not yet confirmed.

It is unclear who started the violence, but an eyewitness told The Daily Mail, "it seemed liked a group of fans rushed the bar where Serbs were drinking and it all kicked off with tables, chairs and bottles thrown," suggesting England fans were the instigators.

English football used to be known for violent clashes in its domestic leagues. These days, that form of hooliganism has mostly been snuffed out, but incidents like this are not rare during international tournaments, with fans causing ugly scenes before the Euro 2020 final at Wembley.

Dr Mike Hope, a football policing expert, recently told The Metro that English fans may be seen as a "trophy" for opposing hooligans given the reputation of previous decades.

UK police have been working with their German counterparts to limit violence as much as possible, with The Metro reporting up to 1,600 banning orders have been put in place to stop trouble-makers reaching Germany.
