San Fransisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy put his ten points clear in the first half of Super Bowl 58, but he failed to capitalize on the lead, losing 25-22 in overtime to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Mahomes MVP

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw the game-winning touchdown with three seconds left in overtime, winning his third Super Bowl MVP award.

Headline story

Despite that, the real headline story between the two quarterbacks is that of Brock Purdy, who just two years ago was the last pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, as reported by ESPN.

Almighty rise

The 'Niners' quarterback has had an almighty rise within the San Fransisco locker room, taking him from the third-string QB to MVP contender.

'Mr Irrelevant'

However, it turns out Purdy has been doing this all of his football career, earning the perfect nickname 'Mr Irrelevant,' which he picked up after the draft, according to NBC Bay Area.

Iowa State

Before becoming the NFL star he is today, 'Mr. Irrelevant' had to work to become the starting QB at Iowa State University, being the third-choice QB there when he arrived.

The luck he needed

In his freshman year, Purdy got all the luck he needed, with the two other QBs getting injured. As reported by The Athletic, Purdy completed 146 of 220 total passes and threw 16 touchdowns, leading Iowa to a 7-2 record.

Winning seasons

In his remaining three years, Purdy consolidated his spot as starting QB, enjoying winning seasons all four years and leading Iowa to their highest national ranking since 1895 (9th).

Breaking records

Upon finishing his college career, Purdy was a three-time All-Big 12 quarterback and held 32 school records, according to Iowa State University Press.

262nd overall

Even breaking school records and being named an All-Big 12 quarterback wasn't enough for scouts to see his true potential, being drafted as the 262nd overall pick in 2022.

Low priority

According to NBC Bay Area, the 'Niners' had drafted a quarterback as a low priority because of the acquisition of star QB Trey Lance, whom they took as the third overall pick the year before.

Getting the luck he needed

Again, Purdy got the luck he needed to work his way into the starting lineup, with Lance suffering a season-ending injury in week two and Purdy taking the spot of Jimmy Garoppolo in October 2022.

Improbable story

Since taking the starting spot in October 2022, 'Mr Irrelevant' has created one of the most improbable draft stories in history, going from third-choice QB to Super Bowl QB and MVP frontrunner in 22 months!

History defining season

As reported by Yahoo Sports, Purdy has had one of the greatest quarterback seasons in San Fransisco 49ers history.

Franchise records

This season, 'Mr. Irrelevant' has set franchise records for passing yards (4,280), became the first 'Niners' QB in two decades to throw 30 touchdowns (31), and led the league in passer rating (113) and yards per attempt (9.6), as also covered by stat site Football Reference.

'They've believed in me'

According to Yahoo Sports, Purdy said: "They've believed in me since I've stepped in since last year. Throughout the year, I feel like I've grown, and we've all grown together, so definitely blessed to have these guys in the locker room with me."

Falling short

Purdy and the Niners fell short at the final hurdle, but at 24 years old, the 'Niners' quarterback has years to cap off his exceptional journey and win a Super Bowl.
