Goldenballs is back in this 4 part Netflix special about the one and only David Beckham. Love him or hate him, David Beckham has superstar status and is always nice to look at on or off the pitch. This Netflix special follows the life of David Beckham, the highs the lows... and some very emotional and honest revelations.

Left home early

Beckham was just 15 years old when he moved to Manchester and signed a trainee contract for his dream team, Manchester United. It was his father's goal in life to see his son play for the team.

That kick

Beckham caught the eye of the sports world when he scored a magnificent goal from his own half at just 21 years old, thrusting him into the limelight.

You can’t win anything with kids

In 1995, ex-football pundit Alan Hansen famously said ‘You can’t win anything with kids’ referring to Manchester United’s new young team. They won the league and the FA Cup, leaving the Scottish pundit red-faced.

The Treble

In 1998-1999 season Manchester United topped off an incredible treble by beating Bayern Munich in a dramatic Champions League final. They won the Premier League, FA Cup and the Champions League

Posh and Becks

They were never out of the headlines. When David and Victoria Adams, AKA Posh Spice, became a couple they were the hottest property in town and never off the front pages of the newspapers. The Manchester manager was not happy with the attention Beckham was getting.

World Famous Brand

The Beckhams became a global brand and there was nowhere in the world that you couldn’t see either David or Victoria on a billboard or a magazine. Ferguson and his parents were worried David was getting distracted from the real task at hand – football.

England v Argentina

The bubble burst for the England captain when he was sent off against Argentina and the British press demonised a young man for something that wasn’t really his fault. Beckham became public enemy number one and received death threats to both himself and his family.

Red card

Yes Beckham got a red card for a foolish act, but England went on to penalties after extra time. Beckham never missed a penalty, but the press made sure the great British public blamed Beckham for England’s failure. And boy did he pay.

Vile abuse

Beckham suffered years of abuse at the hands of so-called England fans. In the documentary, you can still see the emotion when he talks about it. But the painful part for David wasn’t the abuse he suffered, but what his family had to endure.

Return of the hero

Fans forgave Beckham when he gave a superstar performance against Greece. He scored the winning goal and we qualified for the World Cup. Many still smile years later when watching that goal. Beckham said ‘I just wanted to make everyone happy’... Well you did David, you did.

Trouble with Fergie

Beckham's relationship with Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson became strained and the manager hated all the attention that came with Beckham. Victoria and Ferguson's relationship was strained as a result and things were starting to get ugly.

The flying boot

Things came to a head when the manager (furious after a Manchester loss) kicked a boot in frustration and it hit Beckham just above the eye. Alex Ferguson maintained it was an accident, Beckham remained silent. Their relationship was broken.

Insane in Spain

Manchester United decided to sell Beckham and he chose Los Blancos. Real Madrid was his new challenge and Madrid had a new Galactico. The city went absolutely crazy for David Beckham. Unfortunately, Victoria’s treatment was not so favourable.

Hala Madrid

Things didn’t start well for Beckham in Madrid and he had trouble adapting to the rotating door of managers at the football club. He had only ever had one manager previously, Sir Alex Ferguson. At Madrid he played under 7 different mangers.

Capello

That was, until the last Madrid manager he played for, Capello, came along. He told him he would never play for Madrid again after a bout - but brought him back... and Madrid went on to win the Spanish league. The team and manager alike wanted him to stay but Beckham had already agreed a deal with L.A. Galaxy after they told him he’d never play again for the Madrid team.

To the U.S.A.

The Beckhams head to Los Angeles and the family were happy to leave all the madness, persecution and paparazzi of Spain behind them. Nobody cared about them when Tom Cruise was sitting having dinner at the next table.

Happy Family

Victoria and the kids were happy and blossoming in the L.A. sunshine, yet life for Becks was hard. Football in the U.S.A. was nothing like European football and Beckham knew this level of football wouldn’t keep him in the England team.

Italy and AC Milan

Beckham was told that the only way he could keep his place in the England team was to play with the best in Europe. So he joined A.C. Milan on loan at the end of the M.L.S. season. Victoria was not amused as they had only just settled in to life in the States.

A cup and a home

Beckham spent 5 years in the U.S.A. and helped L.A. Galaxy win the M.S.L. cup. The family loved life over the water and enjoyed calling it their home. But the Beckhams felt it was time to call it a day in the U.S.A.

Finally home

With no more professional ties, the Beckhams could finally return home and be reunited with their families. After years of living abroad they could finally settle down in their own home. Or not...

Backham in Paris

Paris came calling, PSG asked Beckham if he would come and help them out and Beckham being Beckham sees a challenge that is too tempting to refuse. As you can imagine Victoria is not amused. As many have commented on social media, she comes across as very down to earth, honest and funny in this documentary.

Retirement

Beckham decided that season would be his last as a footballer. It was a difficult decision because he loved the game so deeply. But even David Beckham ages.

New Dream

Never one to sit still for a minute Beckham decided that he was going to own a Major League football team and promptly started with the task of making Inter Miami not just a soccer 'team' but a 'global brand'.

How do you do that?

By signing none other than Leo Messi. Making Inter Miami a desirable product by putting one of the greatest footballer's names on the back of his shirt. David Beckham may not be the product anymore but he is still the king of marketing.

A football legend

David Beckham has done it all: he has won the league in England, Spain, USA and France. He has captained his country and won the Champions League, all while being a global icon. Now, let's see what he can win with Inter Miami.
