'The Flying Dutchman'

Around 800 drivers have competed in Formula 1 since its first official event in 1950 (British Grand Prix) and out of those 800 drivers, only 34 of them have won a World Championship title. Max Verstappen is one of those drivers after having won three consecutive titles from 2021 to 2023. The 'Flying Dutchman' is unstoppable, but he also has his idols... These are his all-time top five F1 drivers.

A growing legend

The Dutch driver is climbing the ranks in F1's history after securing 60 wins, 39 pole positions, 105 podiums, and three impressive Drivers' titles, yet he is a long way from catching Lewis Hamilton with 103 wins, 197 pole positions, and seven World Titles.

Interesting choice

Max Verstappen was asked to list his all-time top five F1 drivers during an interview with DAZN, and his answer surprised many!

"Old school"

"I'm going to go with Michael Schumacher, probably Ayrton Senna, Fernando Alonso, Lewis Hamilton, and Juan Manuel Fangio," shared Red Bull driver with DAZN.

People will get mad...

"Do you know what happens? No matter what you say, people are going to comment and they are not going to agree," he added during the interview.

The old engines

Turns out Verstappen's love for 'old school' F1 is strong. "He reckons if he could race in any era, the early 2000s would be it... Because the sound of the engine," according to PlanetF1.

Fernando Alonso

Curiously, the Dutch driver counts Fernando Alonso amongst his top five drivers. The Spanish two-time World Champion with 32 wins is in his eyes one of the most talented drivers in the paddock.

A fan

"I remember when I was go-karting watching him in Formula 1 and he was always the driver that I was like 'yeah he can race' and that is something," shared Verstappen during the interview.

The Spanish 'matador'

Fernando Alonso was also the first Spaniard to be successful in Formula 1 and become a World Champion. "I think Fernando always shows himself as he is, which is something I admire a lot. Despite the success he has had, he is still a normal, nice guy," he added during the interview.

Is he one of the best too?

Out of the 800 drivers who have passed through Formula One, picking just five can be a challenging task. Nevertheless, if the Dutch driver continues to grow his trophy cabinet, he might have to include himself on that list next time!
