NFL Power Rankings after Week 14…. Huh?
Week 14 was wild, with the unexpected happening more than the expected. There were upsets across the slate causing big changes in the rankings. So let’s take a look at where every team sits.
The rest of the year is about getting through to 2024 with Bryce Young healthy and without him losing any confidence he has left. There needs to be a hard reset within the organization in an attempt to build around their number one overall pick.
The Cardinals’ season has seen some encouraging signs for a franchise needing some positivity after a few down years. Whether Jonathan Gannon is the guy to lead them forward is tough to know, but he seems to have something about him at least.
Another team that needs to reenergize and rebuild. They are probably still unsure about their future at quarterback but with a few more losses could see themselves in contention for a top prospect come draft time.
Bailey Zappe played well against the Steelers on TNF but we have seen enough from him to suspect that isn’t sustainable. What direction this team goes in the offseason will be fascinating to watch.
The Chargers are definitely not the fifth-worst squad, but they manage to find ways to play like it. Justin Herbert is the latest big-name injury in a season that promised so much but delivered, almost inevitably, nothing.
The Vikings’ defense has been very good of late but there is no excuse to get shut out in the NFL. Jimmy Garoppolo’s contract isn’t so large that it should be prohibitive if they choose to go full rebuild, which they probably should.
The Tommy DeVito train keeps rolling on, ‘Cutlets’ is playing good football, well certainly better football than many expected, but we are still unsure he’s going to be leading the Giants back to glory next season.
The Titans came from behind to beat a legit Super Bowl contender on MNF with Will Levis and Deandre Hopkins playing lights out on offense and the entire defensive line looking dominant of late.
Is there a Zach Wilson redemption arc incoming? Probably not, but he did play arguably his best game on Sunday against the Texans. It’s all a little too late for the Jets who have wasted another season with this fantastic defense.
Desmond Ridder and Drake London played very well in the Falcons’ matchup against the Bucs but it still wasn’t enough to win. One of the strangest teams in the league at the moment as they struggle to do anything well with any consistency.
The Bears are starting to look like a competent team of late, not something we necessarily expected to see this year. They have probably seen enough to give Justin Fields another season as a starter.
Probably the most uninspiring 28 points of all time. There’s something just unenjoyable about this Saints team (and the whole NFC South really) that makes us wonder what they’re hoping to achieve with this roster.
Speaking of the NFC South, the Bucs are currently 6-7 and leading the division. There is talent on this roster, but they don’t showcase it enough to give us any confidence that they will against the top teams in the NFC if they do make the playoffs.
The Rams probably should’ve beaten the Ravens on Sunday but the lack of talent on their defense caught up to them. They have been significantly better than expected this season and will be very interesting to follow this offseason.
It doesn’t get any easier for the Seahawks as they get a wounded Eagles team next week having faced the Niners with Drew Lock as their starting QB this week. They looked better in week 14 than perhaps they might have, but this season has been a flop after big expectations.
There’s no shame in losing to Tommy Cutlets as the league is finding out, however, we thought the Packers were looking like they had turned a corner and were ready to make a deep playoff push and this loss makes that seem far less likely.
The Colts have been feisty this season and played well with a backup QB. They should be excited about their prospects moving forward and hopeful of making the playoffs this year. A feel-good story in the NFL in 2023.
The Vikings’ defense has been playing exceptionally of late and they have been able to scrape some wins despite their offense coming to a juddering halt. Josh Dobbs looks to have fallen off a cliff recently and was benched for Nick Mullens in this game.
Pittsburgh are still playing fairly well but ultimately they still need more from their offense if they want to win more games. Every week it seems like they score 16 or 18 points which just isn’t enough in the NFL.
The Texans have slipped a little in recent weeks and were shown up by the New York Jets defense on Sunday. C.J. Stroud is a lock for offensive rookie of the year, but this wasn’t his crowning achievement.
The Bengals are finding form late in the season leaving us to wonder how good they would be with Joe Burrow under center. Jake Browning is playing very good football currently and could take the Bengals into the playoffs.
After a terrible start to the year, the Broncos have turned things around and now look like a legit playoff contender. Defensively solid and with an offense doing just enough, we certainly wouldn’t want to be matched up against them when we get to January football.
The Jags were able to put up points against the Browns despite the injury to Trevor Lawrence. Defensively, despite some improvements, they still aren’t especially good and that was found out by Joe Flacco of all people.
The Bills won a close game, not something they have been able to do in recent seasons it feels like. Sure they got a little bit of luck with Kadarius Toney’s offside costing the Chiefs the win, but it’s important to note how well the Bills played to grind out the win.
The Chiefs stay at eight for now as we just don’t see them as the juggernaut they have been in previous seasons. The offense is still very good by most metrics but they aren’t putting up points in batches like they used to.
Joe Flacco is playing legitimately well on his comeback to the NFL which could be ominous for the rest of the AFC given how good this defense can be when it’s fit and firing.
Never has a 9-4 team looked so shaky towards the end of the season. Offensively they are struggling compared to their early-season success and defensively there are big issues.
One of a few teams near the top of the league that looked unconvincing this week as they fell to a late Titans comeback. This is a very good team, but do we trust them to go into Baltimore and get a win come playoff time, probably not right now.
Speaking of unconvincing… The Eagles got blown out for the second week in a row by another NFC contender. Next Sunday’s matchup against the Seahawks could be a ‘get-right’ game or see this team implode. This is an aging roster who look tired which might suggest if things go badly, it might all look a little different in Philadelphia next season.
The top three teams in the league are all looking very good and could arguably be placed in almost any order. The Cowboys looked dominant against their division rivals on Sunday and have put themselves in a great position for the number one seed.
The Ravens needed to battle against the Rams to get the win on Sunday, which is nice to see as they needed to show some steel going into the playoffs. It would be no surprise to see this team reach the Super Bowl.
The Niners did what they do on Sunday and steamrolled the Seahawks. It is tough to see how anyone can beat them if they continue playing at this level. December 25th sees the Niners host the Ravens in a potential Super Bowl preview, keep it free NFL fans, you won’t want to miss it!
