Weekly report card

After every week of the NFL season, we are assigning grades to every team's performance. We try to use the context of their season when we're grading teams, as it's unfair to just give bad teams low grades even when they've battled hard. With all of that being said, if you're a Cowboys fan, you may want to skip the slide on your team this week…

Baltimore Ravens - A-

The Bengals slowed down the Ravens' vaunted running game on Thursday Night Football but could not do the same to Lamar Jackson's passing game. The MVP front-runner was impeccable all night. Defensively, issues clearly need addressing, as the Bengals picked them apart too easily.

Cincinnati Bengals - B

We can't knock the Bengals too much for losing the Ravens by one point, but it would have been nice to see other players perform anywhere near the level of Joe Burrow and Ja'Marr Chase. The Bengals season is nearing the point of no return after this loss.

Carolina Panthers - A

The Panthers marched into Munich and scraped a win against another bottom-of-the-barrel team in the Giants. It wasn't pretty, and it wasn't good, but it was a win, which Panthers fans can savor. Carolina is unlikely to move on from Bryce Young this offseason, given the draft capital committed to him, so missing out on the number one overall pick isn't too big of a deal.

New York Giants - D-

Daniel Jones fell apart in front of our eyes on Sunday morning, missing passes most high school QBs would make and not throw to wide-open receivers multiple times. Despite a huge investment in the defensive line, the Giants can't stop the run, with Chuba Hubbard gashing them for over 5.5 YPC. Is it time for Cam Ward-watch in NYC?

Chicago Bears - D

As John Breech wrote for CBS Sports, “Whatever rock bottom is in the NFL, the Bears offense hit it on Sunday.” We're sorry to blame Caleb Williams for this, even if he didn't play well. There are coaching issues that need resolving in the offseason; Otherwise, Williams may struggle to rebound.

New England Patriots - A

The Pats got home for nine sacks against the Bears and held Chicago to just three points. On the other side of the ball, Drake Maye made some nice throws, mixed in with a few misses he'll want to improve on. Maye was never the finished article coming out of UNC, but he has the talent to be elite, we firmly believe that.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers - C

A season that started with such promise for the Bucs is slowly but surely falling apart around them. Baker Mayfield made some incredible plays late in the game to give his team a chance, but it was too little too late, as the Tampa defense couldn't do much to slow down the 49ers' passing attack.

San Francisco 49ers - A

The Niners needed this win desperately, and they were able to sneak home with the dub in the end. Brock Purdy picked apart a good Bucs defense all game, with rookie Ricky Pearsall getting his first NFL TD just a few months after being shot in an attempted robbery, which is a story worth mentioning.

Kansas City Chiefs - B-

We're wary to use the word 'luck' when it comes to the Chiefs as they end up on the winning side so often, there must be some skill involved too. However, we can't help but feel the Chiefs got a bit of luck against the Broncos on Sunday after blocking a field goal to secure the win.

Denver Broncos - B

Per CBS, the Broncos only had one drive in the second half that went for more than 10 yards, you're not going to win many football games playing like that. This is an ascending team that will continue to improve, even if this year is too early for them to be a real contender.

Indianapolis Colts - C

We're a little confused by the Joe Flacco experiment in Indy now, as he isn't playing well enough to stop Anthony Richardson from getting much-needed NFL reps. His three interceptions made this game unwinnable for the Colts, whose hopes for the playoffs are starting to look bleak.

Buffalo Bills - B

Josh Allen had a couple of passes he'll want back in what was one of his most lackluster performances of the year. Outside of that, he and the offense were efficient and the Bills' defense was dominant, turning the ball over four times, including a pick-six.

Washington Commanders - B-

This was Jayden Daniels' first experience of playing a defense like the Steelers, and for obvious reasons, he struggled, as many QBs did. CBS Sports reports, the Commanders only gained 68 yards of offense through the final 27 minutes of the game, so to keep it as close as they did is a sign this team has some legitimacy.

Pittsburgh Steelers - B+

It wasn't a classic performance by the Steelers as they struggled to assert offensive dominance on Washington, they did do enough though, grinding the Commanders down before winning it late with a beautiful throw to Mike Williams by Russell Wilson and a defensive stop to signal Item.

Jacksonville Jaguars - C-

If the Jags defense had played like the offense, we would have had to create a new grading system for them this week, an 'F' wouldn't have been enough. Fortunately, Jacksonville's defense, which hasn't been good this year, came to play, picking off Sam Darnold three times and making things close. Mac Jones was playing QB, however…

Minnesota Vikings - C+

If Darnold and the offense plays like this against a better team, the Vikings will struggle to win games later in the year. Fortunately, this is still one of the best defenses in football, and they were able to grind out the win. A loss here could have felt catastrophic, making the win feel even more significant.

New Orleans Saints - A

The Saints fired their head coach and immediately looked like a new team, funny how often that happens. Derek Carr played well, looking more like the QB we saw in the first two weeks of the season. We doubt the Saints will be among the playoff contenders given their relative lack of talent, but a few more wins, and they can throw a spanner in the wild-card race.

Atlanta Falcons - C

It's tough to blame a kicker for a loss, as ideally, you're never settling for field goals, Younghoe Koo did miss three makeable kicks, however, and that did essentially lose the Falcons the game. Atlanta has a comfortable lead in the NFC South, so this loss shouldn't matter too much for now.

Los Angeles Chargers - A

The Chargers are going to play tough in every game, and that's exactly what they did against the Titans on Sunday as they physically dominated Tennessee. The Titans' offensive line will be having nightmares all week after giving up seven sacks on the day. Justin Herbert continues to play at a high level, operating the offense as efficiently as possible.

Tennessee Titans - C+

This isn't a good team, so a loss to the Chargers is to be expected. The positive was Will Levis, who went 18/23 for 175 yards and two TDs, and even more importantly for his development, no interceptions. We are still unconvinced Levis will ever be a good NFL player, but performances like Sunday can go a long way.

Arizona Cardinals - A+

We aren't overly shocked that the Cardinals beat the Jets. We are, however, a little surprised in the manner of victory. Arizona beat the brakes off New York, shutting down what can be a good offense and picking them apart offensively. Don't look now, but the Cardinals lead the NFC West and look like a good football team.

New York Jets - F

Yikes. That was about as ugly as it gets for the Jets, who are staring down the barrel of another playoff-less season in what was supposed to be their chance to win it all. We were never convinced of their Super Bowl aspirations this year, as we thought they had a chance to fall apart, we didn't expect anything as bad as this, though.

Dallas Cowboys - F-

Why did the Cowboys persist with Cooper Rush for so long in this game? We don't want to pile on as he has carved out a nice career as a backup QB, which is more than we ever have, but that was one of the worst quarterbacking performances we have ever seen. If it wasn't for Micah Parsons et al. on the defensive front, this could have been 50 or 60.

Philadelphia Eagles - A-

Our only slight knock is on Jalen Hurts in the first half, who looked slow in his decision-making and turned the ball over twice, even though both weren't egregious. The second half was about as one-sided as an NFL game gets, with Hurts turning things around and the embarrassing defense Cooper Rush and Trey Lance when he got in the game. The Eagles are legit.

Houston Texans - C

This was a game the Texans will want back. After taking a 23-7 lead, things fell apart for CJ Stroud and the offense who couldn't get anything going in the second half. It must sting for the defense to force so many turnovers and still be on the wrong end of a game like this.

Detroit Lions - C+

We aren't sure of the stats, but there can't be many QBs who throw five interceptions and still get a win. Detroit were slowed down by the Texans but even that wasn't enough as they scraped home with a late field goal to win. Jared Goff hadn't thrown an interception for five weeks before Sunday so he was due.
